99 spec tail lights

I've clicked on the link to rx7store.net and want to order the 99 spec tail lights. The way the australian dollar is now they are half the price they used to be. The only thing that concerns me is that I can't see them to check the quality. I've seen that many aftermarket front bumpers that have bad fitment, in fact I've never seen one that has good fitment. What concerns me is that I will get these tail lights sent half way around the world and not be happy with the fitment. If they don't fit that well I won't use them and will have wasted my money.

So ..... can someone who has used them tell me what they are like. For the purposed of this exercise try to be the worlds most cynical, fussy, negative person imaginable. :)

Save your money and have your stock tail lights converted.

they were made by mazda for the rx-7 and are an oem piece. they fit perfectly, just the way mazda intended them to be. i got mine from jason too, you'll be pleased

You can either convert your tailights yourself for the cost of $20 US or go to www.jt-imports.com and buy them from Jason. JT is located in Japan so it won't take nearly as long to get them. I would just suggest converting your stockers! It's easy. Take them out, take them apart, and just paint everything black except for the circles like on the '99+ tails. You really can't tell a bit of difference and it will save you a TON of money. Just my .02

Mike: the "99" tailights actually first came out in '95 (not sure why everyone here calls them 99 spec) - and as such, were available on the series 7 in australia. First thing I'd do would be price check them from Mazda. After the heart-attack from that - check with a local jap-parts importer - they (2nd hand units) aren't too hard to get hold of. The yen vs $A is also very good these days (for you - not me, sadly...)

The Yen rate is TERRIBLE right now...I remember when I could get 120Yen for $1. Now I can get $103 for $1. That's 17 Yen per dollar or 1700 Yen per $100 difference.

The Aussie series-7 (96-98) didn't get the same Jap-spec series-7 lights as Mazda Australia didn't want to spend the money on compliance testing. As the Oz-RX-7 was a rip off at twice the price of the same car in Japan, volume was way down & didn't justify the expense.

Just worked out that everyone calls them series-8 (99-02) tail lights as thats the car that they where known for.

Although if you use that same whacky American logic that calls the 92 RX-7, a 93 RX-7. That should make them known as 00 tail lights in the USA.........:p:

i also do 99 spec taillight conversions for $50 + shipping..... i have done a lot here in the west coast but since you are not in the states, its up to you...

Try this guy from Mazda Australia.

Darrin Ray - spare parts dept.
Gosford mazda - 02 4337-8099

He brings in all the juicy RX stuff & does the series-8 tail lights for around AU$700 a pair the last I heard. Could be cheaper by now. Does the series-8 nose & spoilers etc etc if you wanna update that way too.

really? that's a revelation! - I guess the 95- headlight conversion is just so popular.

Thanks, I'll check that out. It might be a little more expensive but probably worth it to save all the hassle. I'm keen to phone now but it's sunday :)
