99 spec steering wheel
FOr all you people that have the 99 spec steering wheel on your FD, is it possible to keep the airbag funtional in the 99 wheel?

No, it isn't. I bought the wheel for my boyfriend, and you can't keep an airbag in it.

actually I just saw your wrecked car pics, and that was the 96-98 steering wheel you had in there, not the 99+.

i have been wondering the same thing, what makes it so that you cant use it? with the 99 or the 96-98?

I still dont think anyone on the forum has posted feedback regarding having been in a collision with one. Conceivably, it should work fine, the only hurdle being that you have to cut off the 99 spec adaptor and use one from your old airbag. If you are brave (or stupid enough) you can solder the 93 connector on, but I would suggest doing it in a manner such that you have some type of strong barrier between you and the bag.

The one that spoolingrl had is from type-rz, rsr, bathurst (199X~1996) or so. It never came with an airbag in the first place. I have 3 of those. $120 shipped. anyone interested? ;)

You need to splice a U.S. airbag connector onto the JDM air bag. Other than that it's plug & play. How do I know? I currently have a Spirit R wheel in my car (Flying M logo & red stitching) I had a 99 wheel (nardi logo) prior, but sold it for the current wheel. I have converted two 99+ wheels with no issues. |

Oh crap...look at me givin wrong info. I know the wheel you are talking about now, and I didn't even think of it, even though I looked at it when I purchased the one I got. I was just thinkin "i got one we didn't get here." I feel sorta stupid now...sorry bout that.

The JDM Mazda 1999 Nardi wheel has the "Nardi" emblem on the center section, no mazda logo..........see photo Later Nardi wheels came with the flying M logo. This one is the Spirit R............see the 2nd photo |

Does the mazda protege and miata steering wheels fit the FD with no problems?
and what would i need to make it work? |
I know there are people here that have used a protege wheel (specifically, the mazdaspeed protege). http://www.silverbulletrx7.com/StWheel/StWheel.html. Not sure about the Miata, though....

As far as the Protege or Miata wheel. The alignment studs for the hub are 90 degrees off. You have to drill your hub to fit the other wheels. Not a big deal, but not a direct bolt on. |

to complete a DC circut you have to have + & - Take a 12vdc light bulb & touch only the + from your battery to it. Since the airbag is not grounded to the car, both wires have to be connected to it. It's a simple pyro charge. I watched them blow up airbags at a junk yard awhile back. All it took was a car battery with a switch on one wire, a couple of aligator clips & stand back. When those babies blow the jump off the ground 4-6 feet. With all that said............. When plugging or unplugging the airbag connector I would (the manual also states this) disconnect the negitive cable off your battery. Go for it....... your not gonna kill yourself........... I spliced the U.S. connector on the JDM bag with solder & shrink wrap. Just do one wire at a time & never touch both wires together, if they are bare, with your hands (static elect) |
