99' spec spoiler wing - trunk damper

Hello,

I am not sure it is the correct place to ask (let me know otherwise).

Ever since I put a 99 spec wing spoiler on my FD, the trunk barely opens by itself (I have to push it and hold it otherwise it falls back slowly).

I am just curious to undertsand if I am the only one to have the issue with that wing and if my dampers are too old (90000 miles) or if they are too weak to start with for the spoiler weight.

I am thinking both but I am curious to have your feedback (it stayed open before I put the wing on but I did not look into it too much).

Thanks.

Joel

Where did you get your spoiler?

Thanks,

Dan

ebay, I could not find any used one that matched my car color on the forum at the time and a brand new one was too expensive.

Joel,

The same thing happens to my trunk with the 99 wing. It will not stay open by itself. The 99 wing is heavier than the r1 wing, therefore the shocks are going to have more of a load to hold. I am sure it wouldn't hurt to also replace your 90k shocks.

Also, my shocks have 24k on them and they still don't hold the wing up. Someone with more experience with the 99 wing could give you some advice... Hope this helps.

Ryan

I bet the trunk dampers can be changed, at least it's telling me I need to change them for stronger ones as opposed to just the OEM ones (maybe some one has any recommendations?).

thanks Ryan,

Wasn't it FDnewbie who had a GB on the 99spec struts that hold up the hatch with wing?

I can't remember who I ordered mine from but it holds the hatch open without a problem.

Yes, Ramy did do a group buy years ago. It is amazing what "search" will do...

The group buy has been over though. What's a new way to solve this dilemma?

See if you can get them through: http://www.rx7boutique.com/

I have not downloaded the "j spec" catalog in the stickies section. Is the part number listed there? If it is, then I would imagine that you could contact a forum member in Japan to get the part for you. Or you could send the part number to RHDJapan and I am sure they could order it for you.

You can also try to go to your local auto part store and see if you find one that will fit and is stronger.

Lol, mine too, seems worse when it's cold out... I can't count how many times the trunk lid has closed on my head when I'm back there.

just a thought,Tein makes hood dampers for the rx7,maybe they could be used on the hatch with some modification.I would think they could hold more then the factory ones.http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/t...96-p-7464.html

I picked up a set of hatch dampers from Autozone, unfortunately the craftsmanship is pretty poor. I had to do some modifications to get them to fit on well enough to temporarily satisfy me. I plan to take them off this summer and make up some better brackets for them. The dampers themselves are plenty strong to hold up the hatch and OEM 99 wing. I believe it was around $40 for both.

Amberbeer 05-14-12 04:41 PM

I wish I knew what damper you got, I have aftermarket dampers with disappointing mountings and results. Well the mounting are less than a factory like appearance, which would be fine if they did the job. As they don't do the job and tend to be the first thing I notice when reopening my eyes after being thwacked in head, typically by the latch.

I swear if it hits me in the head one more time...

I would love any help in solving this one.

93rx74lyfe 05-14-12 06:12 PM

Strange, my stock ones are perfectly capable with my 99 spoiler.

MazdaSpeedDan 05-14-12 06:18 PM

Mine would slowly close as well. Not strong enough.

Amberbeer 05-14-12 07:30 PM

Never tried new stock dampers, but had been advised they wouldn't cut it... So you are saying that your hatch will never closes on it's own, 93rx74lyfe? Do you have the the rear wiper as well?

93rx74lyfe 05-14-12 08:59 PM

No rear wiper but my 100k mile struts hold the trunk up with no problems. Maybe their in such good shape because I've kept them free of dust and well lubricated.

ZeroPistonPower 05-15-12 04:32 PM

Mine could never handle the extra weight of the 99 spec spoiler

DMoneyRX-7 05-15-12 04:55 PM

Maybe someone should measure the size of the strut and the length of the the stroke and source an aftermarket one that is stronger

Gomez 05-16-12 06:07 AM

Part number for the LH strut is F139-63-620

Part number for the RH strut is F139-66-620

I hate to bring this back from the dead but I have the same problem. Anyone have suggestions on stronger dampers??

It's cheaper to buy dampers then the carbon fiber center insert
