99 spec OEM side skirts filler question
 

I have a set of oem sideskirts, the problem I am having is there is a few chunks missing on the top side of them, where the body meets the skirt. I was wondering since they are made out of rubber is there anything, I could use for a filler? They are at the body shop and the guys over there wanted to sand them down to fix the problem. I would rather fill them some how.



these sideskirts are made of a rubber like material, not fiberglass which is prone to cracking. These skirts fit perfectly and add a unique look to any RX-7.

Are you sure those are authentic or replicas?

People who had replica skirts had installation problems.

I don't think he has installation problems...it sounds like a piece broke off and since its plastic he wants to know if there is any material available to fix it, i only work with fiberglass so don't know much about plastic

Its probably polyurethane if its flexible.

The shop should have a way of filling polyurethane. If not, suggest you go to a shop who is more knowledgeable.

My OEM skirts are the same way. (Polyurethane)
They are really no different than pool noodle, flopping around all over the place.

Thanks guys for the responses! These are authentic and it's polyurethane rubber material like a dense rubber foam. what can I use to fill it in with? it has a slit on the top of the them where they meet the body like somebody cut into it when taking them off like 1" into it and came back under it so there is a slit missing really small :(

You could use the stuff they use to bond body panels and bodykits onto the car. Its black in colour and flexible and very strong. Cant think of the name but the body shop should know the stuff.

They make a specific filler for repair of polyurethane.....as long as it's not THAT bad. If your chosen shop doesn't know that...or has no experience with it, go to another shop. It will also require a flex additive in the refinish material as well.

I wish somebody knew the name of the poly filler. That's exactly what i'm looking for :) The problem is this is my buddy paint shop,I trust him I am just want to make sure we are using the right stuff! He uses poly repair more for bumpers. The issue is the side skirts are rubber.

If they are OEM, the side skirts are no rubber, they're made of the same material the bumpers are made of.

Yes they are OEM, Just feel really diff from the bumper. I guess cause they are thick compared to the thin bumper skin. The thing is the skirts are flimsy I guess to fit the body better. I use to have the shine 99 spec side skirts but never mounted them. He said they had fitment issues.

I don't have the skirts, but I'd bet the material is the same thickness on both. The bumper cover is backed by foam (and reinforcement) for shape and support, and the particular contours may make it only seem less flimsy. You could probably make your own foam backing for the skirts without too much trouble if you felt the need.
