99 Intercooler Duct
 

Has anyone tried or though about fitting a '99 spec intercooler duct in our 93-95 cars? I'm curious what would have to be moved around to get this duct to fit. This duct is purported to flow more air and does not have the cross over duct opening on top. (My anal retentive self just doesn't like the aluminum patch over the hole solution)

If someone could provide me the part number for the 99 intercooler duct, I'd like to order one just to see where the fitment problems are.

Is the duct actually larger? I thought it just flowed more air because the bumper opening is larger.

The square area of the radiator inlet mouth is 2.1 times bigger and the radiator core has been increase from 25 mm to a whopping 27 mm.

The oil cooler ducts are 1.75 times bigger.

The intercooler duct is 1.8 times larger."

It's all because of the larger mouth of the bumper.

Anyway, just paint the duct so you don't see the aluminum. The stock 99 spec duct isn't even sealed. It's the same duct with holes and they just put a foam pad over the two holes. I'm sure I have a pic of mine before with those foam pads somewhere.

The big thing is the stock airbox pulls from around the hood latch to get fresh air, not from the IC duct.

And Dale is right, the big change is that with the 99 spec bumper you are getting air from behind the bonnet catch and from an open slit in the license plate section of the front bumper for a ram air effect as you can see on my car here when it was basically stock minus a twin power, PFC and cat-back exhaust.

The duct is longer and hangs down further into the opening of the car. It does not appear physically larger. But Mazda claims it flows 1.6 times better. As far as the crossover duct, yes it takes in air from the latch area. I have solved that problem by printing 3 aerodynamicly designed inlets (using CFD software that insert into openings cut into the black plastic filler piece separating the front intake from the cavity containing the latch and openings. I would like to get the duct to perform flow and temperature tests but need the duct part number.

Ok. Well, someone with a Japanese parts manual can look it up for you. I would try the Australian forums as Oz has tons of S8 cars over there.

Oops! that is the cross-over duct that attaches to the air filter box. I need the intercooler duct that attaches to the intercooler.

Does anyone know what the part number is for the 1999 (or newer) intercooler duct is?

The same as 93-95. They're not different.

Would like to know if anyone ordered the 99-spec intercooler air duct listed above, and if it is indeed different than the 93-95 spec duct (other than having the airbox opening taped over).

IC duct has to be the same size as IC itself is of same size. You can just epoxy small sheet of plastic over the opening for $10 that is less than a lunch money these days.

If anyone wants to keep the stock air box and take advantage of opening behind the plate mount in the 99+ bumper, would have to get the crossover duct and air guide on newer front bumper.
Which IMO is too much money that can be spent toward a good SMIC.
IC matters more than the air temp seen at the filter itself unless your Nat Asp'd
Cooler(it's a relative term on a rotary with radiator at the bottom) air at the filter will definitely help, multiples aren't as great with cooler air temp/money ratio than a good IC.
You can get imaginative with rail/radiator gap and orange duct towards your aftermarket intake.

CIB24's engine bay is sooooo clean, think I'm ready to crack an egg on top of his UIM when he's done driving. Color's all Tottenham as well.
