99-2000 Fd
HI i was just wondering if would be a good idea to swap in a jap spec 99-2000 rx7 engine into the FD. I read in the forums that they finally had it right in that year. It must mean that they fixed all the reliability issues were takin care of. What do you guys think?
yeah but I hope your good w/ wiring because most of the harness's don't match up from what I have seen and well... if you are bring it on and post some pics! Wouldn't mind hearing about how hard it was to convert it either.
Take it easy, Ryker |
do you have a ton of money to get it here, the shipping and customs charges can be huge just for bringing over a motor, sometimes the cost is buy a new car
That motor is very hard to come by.....it will be very expensive. As far as wiring haven't know of any difference compared to when i put my Jspec motor in. But you can always get a Power FC at the sametime that clears alot of the headaches of the egr and stuff like that.
You can always use your US manifolds and sensors to make wiring easier. |
i didnt know that buying an engine from overseas will cost as much as the car. I dont own a FD yet because i am still looking and i also heard that the rx7 is coming back with a turbocharged renisis motor thats targeted at 350HP. And most importantly it s going to be a 2 seater! So if it comes im willing to wait. But i am just planning ahead just in case i do get a FD and if it happens to be a lemon.

Well most of this is not true. I dont know about the wiring, but I can ask my bud at RE. Also its not that expensive to send an engine. Customs aint shit if its a used engine, and it only cost $500. Well the engine wouldnt really cost that much though. Standard on new parts is 3.5% of part cost. Used can be duty free but usually the same 3.5%. As for are the easy to get? Hell yes. All Rotarys are easy to get, it just depends on how good of condition you want it in. We all change everything and turn a decent motor into unreliable. OH WELL got to have speed...
ALSO the Renasince motor is not turbocharged, but aftermarket companies are already puting in the works to make it that way.. |
i heard abouth the 4th gen coming out, do you guys know the price it will be or how it will look like?
Heck no. The 4th gen is nothing but a rumor, and will stay that way until at least the middle of 2005. Just hold onto your nuts and let's see where it takes us. But I'll make an educated guess. I would say it would be in the neighborhood of $35K and as for looks? Your guess is as good as mine. But I'm sure that it will keep the original FD styling and then some.
I don't know about you guys but I'm already saving up for the skyline in 2005...gonna buy that thing on payments
Who/where would one have to go through to get a used, good condition 99+ 13b?
As in the R35 Lexus wannabe Skyline? Or the true to the hear sports coupe version?
I can find J-spec 13b engines. To the people that said the wiring is different, you are totally right. Here in UK I find both versions. The newer engines with a 16bit computer have totally different harnesses and plugs for the ecu. There are alot of differences and would be impossible to use the new stock sensors-which makes it better than our 8bit. Lets say all the solenoids- on the newer ones there is just one big box, unllike our rat's nest. Unless you find a complete engine with harness and ecu, then you also have to reprogram it-who? You could get a Power FC but make sure it's the 16bit one-kind of hard to find. Alot of complications!!!!!
I thought all power FCs had a 16 bit processor???
There are a number of detail differences in the 99+ models which affect power output besides the engine itself. I think most of them are talked about on this site:
http://www.rx7.net.nz/newrx7.htm The later FD's also had a different intake that separated air for the engine from air for the intercooler and some other detail changes that may not be on the site I've linked. The changes to the front end also allowed more air to get to the intercooler and the oil coolers. (Be sure to scroll down to read all the details in the SAE article.) |

8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit. You should match your computer, harness, and engine all togther, it will make your life a lot easier
So RotaryKnight, you have a slick WRX now eh? Nice, got any pics?
there is no way that the rx7 4gen. would cost $35000, cause a brand new 3rd generation cost about $40000, and that was 8 years ago, i would say that it would cost about $50,000 it will be like a corvette, 2 seater, and i don't know about the horsepower.
well so far i have decided that i dont want a 99/00 motor. It seems to be complicated and expensive for a stock engine. all that money for a jspec engine can be used to rebuild it. but i like the rumors so far about the new 7.
