94 R2 lost in the garage for 11 years what to do??

So I have owned several Rx7's but not one with the rotary motor in it. I have never even drove or rode in a rotary powered rx7. My current car is a 94 R2 with an Ls7/T56 combo with a 8.8 cobra rear end. So I come across a 94 R2 black that has been sitting in a guys garage for 11years. Owner says it ran when he parked it but was having trouble with the after martket Clifford alarm system. Car has 68k miles on it and about 10-15k on the mazda reman. So my plan is to keep this Rx7 with the rotary motor and see what a rotary power Rx7 is all about. So my question is there anything I should look for or change before trying to start the car?? I already got rid of the clifford alarm, drained the gas and replaced with fresh gas.

Change the oil. Change the coolant.

Remove the spark plugs, and put a little oil in the spark plug holes. Inspect the plugs. replace if needed.

Slowly turn over the engine by hand a few times to free up anything that may be stuck. Maybe spray a little gas in the throttle body. Turn on the car and let the fuel pump be on for a minute, and then start it up. Dont be surprised if you get some smoke.

I would also change the tranny and rear end fluids.

Good luck.

How about some pics??

Nice car! As far as your new RX7, I would drain and replace all fluids, check your vacuum hoses as well. It would be wise to look inside the gas tank, make sure there is no rust before you prime the fuel pump.

Another thing to do is pull the EGI fuse under the hood and crank the motor until you have oil pressure. That's the #1 killer of turbo bearings is cranking the car on dry bearings and having the AWS kick in and rev the engine to 3000 RPM.

It will take 20-30 seconds of cranking, just be patient. Make sure the battery is good and strong.

I would probably just remove that whole alarm system, most of those installs are just hack jobs and cause tons of problems.

Ok got to work on the car today removed the alarm what a nightmare and a total hack job wires just taped and twisted together. Changed the oil and pulled the plugs put a little oil in and rotated the motor. Very easy to turn not sure it that is good or bad? Turned it over as recommended with the EGI fuse pulled. Then found out the fuel pump was dead, so I replaced it with a supra one. Tried it again and it fired up and ran good, took it down the street and everything seemed to be fine. So far so good thanks everyone for the advice on the start up!!!!

Nice car. I recently did the same process with a 94 that was parked 11 years.
Replaced all fluids, filters, plugs, O2 sensor. And its running.

Needed a fuel pump Supra), had an oil pan leak (repaired).

Currently needs an airbag diag box, bose amp repair, and tach electrical repairs. Of course, it needs an ac recharge/update to r134.

Compression was in the 90s (ported engine) so I hope that's ok.

Looks great. How is the interior? And the important question ........ how much did you pay for it?

ls1swap 09-08-15 05:09 PM

Thanks, pictures make it look better than in person. My red car only has 20k miles on it and has been completely painted to perfection and the interior is perfect. So I am a little hard on the black one in comparison. Over all the interior is in great shape except the drivers door plastic is broken and of course the map lid is gone. And I put the rims and tires from the red car on the black car to test drive since the tires had flat spots from sitting so long. Which sucks because they look brand new and no dry rotting at all. As for the price it was one where I could not pass it up

That was in a garage for 11 years?! BEAUTIFUL

Sounds like a real beater :icon_tdow

I'll give you 20k for it.

But seriously, nice car man!

My dream car used to be an R1 FD and now that I have one my dream car is a Black non sunroof FD and a slave to wash it.
