94 pep center speaker question " non bose "

So my 94 pep came with a aftermarket headunit , and when i bought the car i never noticed the center speaker working

When i replaced my broken center trans console i took the clarion amp out . "This did not effect any of my speaker function "

Now that i have my dash out i like to replace the center speak * maybe its dead ?*
Upon further searching. The center speaker is already wired into the L/R front speaker into the actual harness

My question is. Even if i replace the speaker to a new one. Would it not work because there is no center amp?
Or would it be functional because its powered by the headunit. Because harness is wired together with L/R speakers

Its all so new to me.

As long as the center speaker is wired directly to the head unit via the wiring harness it should work and can be powered by the head unit. Head units typically put out 25-50 watts rms to each speaker. Keep that in mind while choosing an aftermarket speaker. No need to spend money on a powerful speaker if you aren’t running an amp to it because it’s only getting 25-50 watts. And it’s prob wired into the L/R wiring harness because if you have L and R both attached you get center

If I remember right the center speaker amp gets left and right front signals (tapped into the 2 front speakers) and combines them to run the center speaker. I think it does function as an amp - I'm guessing that if they just ran the 3 front speakers off the head unit it would either be a drop in volume or a higher load on the amp.

Most of the center speakers I've seen are pretty pitiful. They are baked by the sun over the years and even if they aren't blown they would probably sound like crap.

Finding a replacement may be tricky since it's a weird size. Also, not sure how big of a difference it makes to sound quality or staging. Your exhaust will probably be louder :).

I don't remember all the car stereo stuff I used to know. Mid-range speakers are typically 4ohms resistance and when you add more speakers into a circuit you change the resistance. That can put more load on the amp in the head unit.

Probably worth plugging the stock center speaker amp back in and testing to see if it's good.
