94 paint question
 

I recently looked at a 1994 FD Montego Blue. The car was in excellent condition exterior and interior. Low miles, always garaged, all documentation since the first owner, reliability mods only, knowledgable FD owner. It appeared on the portion of the body underneath the doors there was some heavy "orange peeling". It was completely uniform on both sides of the car, not random areas. I asked the owner what this was and he said that the 94 models had some kind of "bedliner" type of material placed underneath the paint to prevent rock chips. The paint as far as I could tell was original, but then again I'm no expert.

Can anyone verify if this "bedliner" under the paint work was on any 94+ models?

That is factory. My 1994 has it, and my 1987 Turbo had it.

Its known as gravel guard and yep, its stock.

mazda used that stuff from the r100 to now, although the newer cars have much less than say an FD.

the edges should be sharp, and straight. the edges dont always line up panel to panel (the doors were painted seperate from the body) but it should be close

its very very very rare that an FD hasnt had some paint work.
