93FD Will Not Run More Than 3 Seconds!!!
 

I just wired in a new alarm harness and was unable to finish due to rain.

I did, however, try to start the car before I went in and it starts and runs for about 3 seconds then dies.

Keep in mind that the alarm itself, and the kill swith are not in yet.

Any help would be great....

from the info you gave, im assuming soooo many things

first would be the fuel pump, turn the key to on but dont start it and listen closely, can you hear the fuel pump?

might be electrical....I'd finish the installation and then start it

Well what did you get done as far as the alarm install goes? That might be good info to have in diagnosing this problem.

Have you attempted to start it again since the first time? It could have just been a stutter, mine does that occasionally.

Ok, here is a little update....

I totally removed the alarm and the same problem is happening. I noticed that when it starts, there is a heavy fuel smell and blue smoke.

The car also tries to climb in idle when started to 2300rpm then dies.

As far as the fuel pump, I think it works. If I pull the relay, the car just cranks but will not turn over. When the relay is put back in, the car cranks and starts for 3 seconds then dies.

I'm out of options and ideas.......:mad:

your testing the fuel pump the wrong way! try jumping it via the diagonistic plug and see if you can hear it running, then pull the fuel hose in teh engine bay and jump it quickly to see if you get any pressure there. then let the fuel evaporate and then turn the car to the on position and see if you can hear it running. perhaps you should check voltage to fuel pump as well.

Ok, status report #3

I jumped out the FP pin on the diagnostic port, and the fuel pump fire up with no problems. I can hear the pump run and fuel flowing in the lines under the hood.

Ok man, you seem to be my only hope!!!!!!

What next?

hook up a vacuum gauge and see what thats doing when the revs start to go up, could be a hose.

Okay now the OBVIOUS question:

Was it working before you attempted to put an alarm in?

Do you have the car on stands?? If yes, is it lifted more on one side?.........., and are you low on fuel??. If so, maybe the fuel pump isn't able to draw fuel?

well, the car is on level ground and the alarm is out.

There is 2/3 tank of gas and yes, it ran awesome before I started.

It might have been a fluke that this happened at the same time the alarm was installed, but I doubt it.

My boost gauge drops from o to 10 in.-Hg and then to 15 in.-Hg.

have you checked ignition? ground the sparkplugs and see if you are gettin sparks as you crank her. also, are you sure your getting constant fuel pressure, prehaps you should pull the fuel hose in the engine compartment, put it in a bucket and turn the car on for a while, (like 10-20 secs) and see if fuel continously comes out during that time.

perhap you pulled off a ground as you installed the alarm.

The ground sounds like something I may have done, I'll have to check.

I went through all my wiring, and all the grounds I tapped into are there.

I didn't chech the spark yet, but I have this weird feeling the igniter is bad. It may have something to do with something I have done, not sure.

Anyone know how to test the igniter?

Not fuel guys, come on, it takes more fuel to start than it does to idle, FP problems are either won't start at all or they manifest at high load/rpm.

90% sure it is the MAP sensor, located on the firewall inboard of the the brake booster/cylinder. little black matchbox sized thing on a braket, it has a plug and a vacuum hose going to it, if that isn't plugged in to the hose got disconnected it will cause the car to flood out just as soon as the computer starts looking for the pressure, which is a few seconds after it cranks over.

That should do it.

check your fuel pump fuse in the panel underneath the drivers dash. should be a 20 (yellow) on the top row, 2nd from the right.

90% sure you're wrong. It wouldn't rev itself with the MAP sensor hose out, it'd stumble around 500 rpms and die.

SBi, can you start it, and rev it to like 3-4k and try to hold it there for a second? Or do throttle inputs do nothing?

I was going to guess MAP sensor, but if you didn't do anything under the hood then... dunno, but check it anyway. Sure seems like an electrical thing to me, since that's what you were playing with. But not being an FD guy, I dunno if you may have disconnected a ground somewhere and inadvertently left it off.

MAP sensor tested out fine, the line seems to be ok.

I'm starting to wonder about the factory alarm system installed in the car.

I'm thinking that I may have tripped an autokill system in the car. I remember unplugging the ignition switch and plugging in the batter to test for the run/start lead.

Does anyone know if there is a way to check or reset the factory alarm? Or, if this type of system exists from the factory?

It may be shutting off the fuel pump......
