93 vs 94+ gas tanks / interchangeable ?

Hi All,
I have a 94 with a leaking gas tank that has been repaired once.. it seems like that repair is failing / leaking.. I was trying to source a 94 tank to replace and have not had much luck (yet)..

I read about baffle differences to try and help with low fuel slosh.. baffles are in the 94+ tanks but not 93.

Is everything else the same ? (IE could I swap in a 93 tank ? )

How about differences in RHD vs LHD tanks.. I don't even know if the fill is on the other side etc..

May seem like a stupid question hoping for a stupid easy answer!

Car is of course parked due to the leak but would like to drive it again soon...

Thanks!

Also worth noting.. the tank itself is damaged.. not anything easy such as a bad hose or seal..

I seem to remember Atkins Rotary got a number of new OEM tanks in stock. And from what I recall you can bolt in a 94 tank to a 93 and vice versa.

Or you can track down a good used tank, but sometimes that can be tricky.

I'd reach out to Fritz Flynn here on the forums. He can be a bit pricey at times, but he tends to have good condition used parts of just about EVERYTHING in an FD!! I've never bought something from him and later regretted it due to it not being as advertised..

94 tanks have better baffling. The 99+ tanks have even better baffling. A new one can be had for around $700 from Ray Crowe. They are all interchangeable. One thing to note is for whatever reason the newer tanks don't have a drain plug.

Any new tanks from the dealers are actually 99+ tanks. They have much better baffling and bolt directly in. Most junkyards will not ship used gas tanks, basically they stink like fuel and shipping companies do not want anything to do with them.

Good pictures to show the differences. You can see the additional baffling in the 99 tank. Its similar to what hyperion and others modeled their anti-surge cover after. While its not always enough for hardcore track use, it still makes a significant difference. I agree, tanks are a pain to ship and for the price you are better off with a new one.

Great thank you everyone! I did check on the Atkins website at some point and there it said they had a bunch of 93 tanks and that 94+ was no longer available but I honestly didn't think to double check with Ray or dealer directly... I was at first just checking locally if someone had a used tank since I didn't think shipping something used that smelled like gas would go over well with shipping either...

I also don't want to just put in another old used tank just to have issues again to me getting a new one and avoiding dropping the tank / switching over things multiple times will definitively be my route.

Thank you everyone for the informative responses!

Glad I read this thread! I didn't even know there was a third design after the '94 models'. That is great to know...now I just need to find $700 lying around somewhere and call up "my guy" at the Mazda dealership... hmmmm

Do the 99+ new tanks ditch the 2 vents the older ones have? I recall seeing somewhere they did?

I'll snap photos and update when my new tank arrives... It will be a 6-8 weeks for arrival...

Thanks to Ray at least it is an option! I have plenty of other projects to work on...

99+ tank that I received has the two vents, I moved over the parts from the leaking tank to this nice shiny new one.

It looks as the photos that Banzai posted show..

When I get some time to finish this project I'll move over the pads and then snap some pictures inside the 94 tank before I scrap it.

Thanks again everyone!
