93 for sale. Maybe.
Hi all, new forum member.
My wife has a RX7 that we're just beginning to think about moving on. So I'm on here to ascertain what you lot think a ballpark valuation would be, because we might decide to keep it if it's not worth the hassle. It's a 1993 Touring model. Automatic (yep, really). A lovely shade of red (had a full spray about 10 years ago). She bought it brand new in 1992, has owned and loved it ever since, and spent a fortune to keep it running well. It's got just over 250,000 miles on it (again, yep really). It's on it's (I think) 3rd engine and 2nd turbo. This engine is low in miles, not sure on exact figures but it goes well. It gets whatever it needs. Had new shocks and exhaust a year or two ago. It's got a fair amount of wear and tear inside - it's been used as a commuter for all those years with longer trips back in the 90s. It gets plenty of time to warm up properly during it's daily drive. She has it serviced by PR Motorsports in Hayward, California. The guy there knows rotaries. It lives by the ocean so it has a fair amount of rust here and there, though not visible until you get right up close. But anybody who bought it would have some work ahead to get it all cleaned up. It drives great. It's only the difficulty with getting some parts that's making us consider selling. So any advice on what it would be worth or how to sell it if we do decide to pull the trigger etc would be appreciated. Cheers all. |
I would keep because you are unlikely to get a decent price for it.
In no particular order these are killer (IMHO): 250k miles + rust + automatic + rust + worn interior + rust. (Perhaps we are spoiled here in CA, but I would not touch a car with rust.) Given the current crazy demand for these cars, you might get $15k for it but it could take a long time to sell because of the negatives. I'd say it's closer to a $10k car but suspect others would disagree. |
You've got a few things going against you:
I. Automatic transmission II. Mileage III.Rust Pictures as far as the rust and severity of it will be a huge determining factor. Values on these cars have been going up, but generally any car with an automatic transmission is going to trail behind its manual counterpart as far as value goes. Of course this is all speculation until pictures of the car can be seen. |
Thanks for the replies. We might just keep it - it's still fun to drive and interesting to own.
If we ever do decide to sell it, where do you start? Keeping in mind that something like Craigslist would just be an invitation to tire kickers and thieves. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...a3ff2a5f1.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...07b7e4bad.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...12ea19305.jpeg |

The forum here has a for sale section, and it would likely have a much higher chance of going to someone who would appreciate it. |
I respect you and your wife for using the car as it was intended: Enjoyment. I mean you can't take it with you, so use it.
From a quick glance that car is in better condition than many cars I have seen with 100K miles and are on their 3rd/4th owner. IMO whenever the time comes you should put it in BAT with a minimum reserve (something you are comfortable with) and with PLENTY of pictures. Also you could ask your shop if they know anyone that is interested in purchasing it. The appeal this car has is that anyone that buys it won't be afraid to put miles on it or mod it without fear of decreasing the value. Granted this is a guy (me) that buys cars to DRIVE them not store them for the next guy. The pros this car has are:

I agree here for the most part. My car has 44,000 miles and I drive it daily. Probably a stupid idea from a collectors standpoint, but I love driving my car, it's fun, that's why I bought it.
So enjoy the car. |

If it makes you feel any better: True collector cars are the ones with sub 10K miles and a 44K mile FD is more of a driver's car. Here's my reasoning, adding 10K miles to a sub10K mile FD will definitely hurt the value. Now turn around and add 10K miles to a 44K mile FD and it won't really make a difference.
So enjoy the car. |

Thanks for that information, Gracer7.

I will say, as someone who recently just purchased my own FD, as well as still dabbles here and there to see what's being sold, and what can be picked up at a fair price, your FD is in a lot better condition than what's normally out here in the market.
Going by BAT the automatic and 3rd engine will kill you, but the price has been steadily going up. I can imagine it fetching 20k and up. Now do know that the buyers at BAT are finicky. You post on the wrong day and its possible that you get a lower price and vice versa. You get the wrong or right expert to vouch for you on the comments can also affect how the sale goes. Now selling it on OfferUp and CL you maybe able to list this at 24k? give or take, but youre in SF and not sure if the market is as hot as what we have here in LA. They already listed all the pluses and I just want to add that having a LHD car i think is an absolute plus with complete history from 1 owner. That and your all black interior alone is worth it. |
That all black interior alone is going to get some people interested, looks great.

I submitted my FC for sale, and it took almost a month before it went live. I will say that BaT tends to have a more mature leaning crowd (FB is an absolute mess, it's laughable.) But that doesn't mean there aren't the exceptions (I had someone comment on my BaT auction and offer to trade me a base model S2 RX-8 for my car that was near mint. I like RX-8's for what they are, I've owned two, but anyone who is into these cars knows that's just stupid.) |
i love it. wow, really cool. automatic doesn't bother me at all. i would keep it
