90 Octane all they got

I'm stuck in Clovis New Mexico at Cannon AFB and all the gas stations here have 90 octane only! WTF?! Do I dare run that in my FD? I know the octane booster you can buy will not work well enough. It may say "Raises octane 7 points", but that's .7, from what I've heard.

90 should be fine. just dont go any lower than that. and it would be a good idea not to use premix or if you do use very very little.

Why not premix?

felix_is_alive 02-06-04 05:57 AM

no boost for you !!! that sucks

DamonB 02-06-04 06:54 AM

To be safe just keep the car out of high boost until you can get the proper gas in it.

he cant use premix because you are essentially lowering your octane rating by adding non gasoline to your mixture.

I think they use 91 octane in California. If your at stock boost levels I think you'll be ok. If you don't have a boost gauge I would follow the above advice and stay out of the gas. Anything over stock boost and you may detonate. I've heard that octane boost does little to help. Most of these guys that are detonating and blowing apex seals are not at 10 psi, there somewhere betweeen 12-16+ psi. Hope your car is coming along crazy-jake, with your luck don't take any chances.;)

ALL of the gas stations in high elevation areas have lower octane gas. In fact, usually stations only have 85, 87, and 89. You don't need as high an octane rating in the high elevations due to reduced air density.

I know there's several guys on the forum running singles and high boost that live in high elevations. Perhaps one of them will comment.

That's an excellent point. Never thought of that.

toulene would work

Driven Mad 02-07-04 11:49 AM

toulene is fine, but do not go overboard. run no more than 3% or so extra.

SkywarpR 02-07-04 07:09 PM

All we get in CA is 91, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Jesuscookies 02-07-04 07:18 PM

If you are worried you can run a gallon of Toulene/Xylene.

I live in So Cal and that is what I do. I put a gallon of Xylene in for every 10 Gallons of 91 octane gas. I am running a single turbo at 14+ PSI.

You can get it at a paint store, or a hardware store.

Do some reading up on it, if you are unsure.

Toulene should work but use 10%+ like jesus said...3% wouldn't do much
