6 speed swap
I'm gonna rebuild my tranny soon, so just wondering if any one did a jdm 6 speed swap on theirs before. pics and specs of the tranny would be nice. thanks

the only 6 speed available thats bolt in for the FD are the HKS 6 speed and 6 speed sequential boxes.
on top of them being in the 8 - 11 THOUSAND range, the standard 6 speed is NOT made for high power and the Sequential is RIDICULOUSLY expensive (ie you could buy another FD for the cost) and if youve ever street driven a seqential box youll realize its REALLY not made for. Noisy, notchy, and complicated (always have to keep track of the gear your in) its really not suited for street driving at all. |
maybe he's talking about the RX8 6speed?
in which case would be a pointless waste of time.. if u want a beefy gear and don't want to spend a fortune.. your best bet is to get an OS Giken Gear set for your stock tranny and be done with it |
I guess there is an adaptor now for a Getrag V160 from a Supra. Good bet there too.

yeah but you need to source one for 2-3k plus parts adapter parts. for that price range i rather switch to a built Th400 with a high stall.

There is no "JDM" 6 speed. All FDs everywhere left the factory as 5 speeds.
The later JDM trannys do have a different ratio for 5th gear, which some people find desirable. Dave |
Series 6 and 7 had different 5th gears anyway. acceleration gear over the cruising gear in the USDM cars.

thanks everyone pretty much answered all my questions. whats a good price on a full tranny rebuild? with labor and parts.

A rebuild price varies tremendously depending on the damage to be repaired, whether hard parts need replaced, how anal retentive the rebuilder is about deciding which parts need replaced, if synchros are included, whether the R&R labor is included, etc.
In my opinion, a "rebuild" should be a minimum of bearings and seals. With labor that's at least $1000, probably closer to $2k. Then R&R gets added to that. A better option for many people is to buy a good used tranny for well under $1000 and have that installed. Dave |

if you really really want a 6spd i would say look for a nice gear set for the RX-8 box and install a nicely built RX-8 6spd with a new gear set. this option is still expensive and actually quite useless a 5spd is just fine in most cases having that extra gear would be nice at times though.

since we are discussing gear boxes here.......im going to be doing a 1jz swap soon and my mechanic insists on mating the rx7 gear box with the 1jz. atleast 5 other fds have done the swap retaining the FD gearbox...all are doing great. there are i think 2 fds with the JZ gear box but both just spin tyres all day!
soo how do i convince my mechanic to go with the 1j gear box? pros n cons? |
I put the short ratio 5th in my car a few years back and I love it.
It's like a 6 speed now, but with no 6th :) 0.806:1 vs the factory 0.719:1 if I remember right. My redline is 180 mph @ 8000 RPM in 5th which is plenty and it pulls hard now even in 5th. Fuel economy is probably down slightly *laugh*. |

Getting a rebuild is a waste of your time and money when you can call Malloy Mazda and get one from Ray Crowe for $2300 brand new.

Hey guys, found this old thread about a 6 speed swap and decided to add a little to it! :)
I'm actually trying to do a computer simulation on which gearbox would be faster / better on the FD, and i'd like some input... This post is 8 months old but I saw a 6 speed trany from an rx8 on ebay and I wanted to see if any what people are doing for trany swaps.
I'm still in the market for an FD and I've come across a few autos at a good price and in good nik, I am also assuming they haven't been beat on being an auto. So for me buying an auto trans and doing a manual swap seems like a feasible route. After seeing the rx8 6speed I was curious if anyone had done the swap. |

Actually it has been discovered that most for the Rx8 tranny related failures are due to the weak factory clutch pedal mechanism. The weak pedal wasn't allowing for full dis-engagement when depressed. Over time it's been killing the trannys. It took Mazda a long time to finally figure out what the root of the problem was. Some techs were even replacing transmission on the same vehicle multiple times till the clutch pedal problem was finally discovered. http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.ph...t=transmission Key post from link: "The driveline "shudder" and gear-grinding descriptions are symptoms of a clutch that is not fully disengaging. When the clutch does not fully disengage, the engine torque loads the synchros and they start to grind. The reason for the incomplete clutch disengagement is because the clutch pedal spot welds flex and disallow the full stroke of the clutch hydraulic actuating system. The clutch pedals on all RX-8s are the same and they are a known failure point, which is why we at BHR strongly encourage EVERYONE to either have their pedals reinforcement-welded or bracketed (both, if you can afford it). To perform this welding will eliminate the transmission problems you are having and, when this solves your problem, you can tell Mazda BHR says "You are welcome" as we discovered and have been on top of this issue for about 2 years (maybe longer, I can't remember). Had Mazda listened to us about the RX-8 they would have saved a SHITLOAD of money for themselves by not having to replace transmissions (and cat-pipes, too) all day long." |

^ I doubt it since it's from malloy mazda. Just in case you weren't aware: Malloy Mazda is a dealership back east. So naturally what they sell is usdm parts.
