6 months and still can't figure it out!

6 Months ago I did the vacuum hose job. During the same time I removed the double throttle butterflys, and did the throttlebody coolant by-pass mod. When I got everything back on the car, she idled great but when I hit the gas she seems to just cut the fuel under load. basically when the motor is trying to get some boost something just cuts the fuel. What can it be? I've taken it apart three times now but still can't find the problem.

I noticed you're using the PFS PMC. Cycle the ignition off/on when it happens. It's most likely the PMC & not your car. Check the discussion under the ECU forum in the 'PFS Purple & midpipe' thread for more info.

One Mod at a time

Have you ever wondered why the guys that have web sites that offer help and advice say to do only one mod at a time ????? I know this doesn't help much now and I'm sure the logic was since I'm already in here why not go ahead and do it.....but look where you are.Not picking on you or flamming you and wish I could help more. I just had to say it since allot of people come in here for help and seem to forget this one item and get carried away with Mods. then get frustrated when it won't work right. Just my $.02 (1 Mod at a time) easier to trouble shoot when it go wrong.:D

well this may be a dumb answer but have you reset your ecu. after i worked on mine once when i went for the test drive when it got into boost the car just totally died on me, like what you say yours is doing, i found out tthat the ecu had gone into limp mode (thanks bacon) so you need to reset your ecu if this could be it, by taking off the negative battery cable stepping on the brake for 20 seconds then let it sit for 2 mins. hope this helps, scott

i have similar problem.

My car is in the shop right now because it has a STRONG hesitation at 3K RPMs. It is like a fuel cut. Is this the same problem you are having? Could this be fixed by resetting the comp? The mechanic has everything torn down now looking for bad grounds. Ill let you know what he finds.

Classic, 3K hesitation problem!

Montego,
this is a common problem on these cars, it's a fault in the factory computer that causes a short lean condition when the secondary injectors are coming on line. It's especially bad when the car is cold. Sorry to say but your mechanic is going to tell you he found the problem, and charge you for some "wiring trouble shooting" etc but the problem will still exist. The easiest way to rid yourself of the problem is to go to a Power FC computer or a stand alone like the Haltech.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was feeling so lost. By the way, no it is not a hesitation problem. I can drive the car up to about 5k as long as I do it slowly so that the turbo doesn't boost. It's only when I step on the gas too much and the turbo's try to boost that the car sputters and smokes out the exhaust. I get the feeling that the fuel is not being burned under load. As if I'm losing spark when the turbos come on.

efiniracing,
Did you try to reset the computer? Any error codes(checkengine) light coming on? Sounds just like "limp mode" to me.

Sounds exactly the problem I had - it would cut off hard under any kind of load. I could get it up into the reve range by being really careful with the throttle, but as soon as boost came on or going up ramp, it would buck HARD. Scared teh hell out of me, hehe. Unplugged the battery for 10 minutes to reset the ecu - it went away.:D

No, its not a slight hesitation

My problem is not a small hesitation, It is an all out fuel cut. As in throw you through the windshield fuel cut. Something is def wrong. I know about the slight hesitation you are talking about, but this is way worse.

I hope to god it is limp mode! I'll see 1st thing in the morning. Atleast I have hope now. :)

efiniracing 01-01-02 04:59 PM

Yes, Yes, yeeeeessss!!!!! I fixed it! It was just limp mode. I must have not re-set the computer right the 1st time. Anyways my car is a fucking monster! she's starting to scare me. I can feel the front end coming up. I have a slight problem however. My boost pattern is 5-16-14. It just seems that my 1st boost spike is taking a long time, then finally when the 2nd one comes on it's all out madness. before I did the hoses my boost pattern was 12-15-12. I know that I'm boosting kind of high but I've tunned it to run very rich. What could be the problem w/ my primary boost?

RTS3GEN 01-01-02 05:05 PM

Check the actuator control rod ends and make sure the clips are all there. If you lost one off the turbo control actuator or the precontrol you'll get low boost off No. 1. Also check to see that you reinstalled the "pills" in the precontrol actuator hose. BTW, glad you got the "gremlin" out. Always check the computer first. Saves headaches and time!

Thanks! I'll go check that now. Man! I'm so happy. What a way to start the new year. God! I forgot how much fun my car was.
