5th gr. grind/rebuilt tranny (FD)

93 FD

I have minor gring from the tranny when I shift up to the 5th gr. Probably my syncro is out.

how much did it cost you to fix that problem?

mazdaspeed00 02-21-04 08:00 PM

700 bucks for me

Herblenny 02-21-04 09:10 PM

Get a new (used) tranny from Rotaryworks in Jacksonville, FL.. he has later model Tranny pretty cheap..

ooEfiniRx7oo 02-21-04 10:03 PM

ouch $700 or new tranny huh....(T.T)

legal-z 02-22-04 07:48 AM

700 was less than i spent. you should plan on putting a clutch (i did an act s/s) in while the tranny is out. if your like me, you then look at a lighter flywheel, synthetic fluid, etc and the price keeps rising.

parts are only about $65, a local mazda mechanic quoted me $60 to do the synchro job. Of course, i will be pulling the tranny

apexkw 02-22-04 02:35 PM

i did mine myself for about $100.. i had to buy a bearing puller and the new parts. (5th gear synchro and updated select spindle)

1st to 2nd in mine cruches abit but sometimes i can shift smoothly. Is this a major problem??

PureSephiroth 02-22-04 09:27 PM

that grinding means its time for new synchros. It can be cheap if you do it yourself and don't mind pulling the tranny for just that problem. However, very few people just replace a synchro. Most people will rebuild the entire tranny.

the tranny rebuild on my FC was $1000+$650 for clutch and resurfaced flywheel.

ummm so I'm talking about $$$ huh...ugh!
I guess I can replace my clutch as well. I was planning
on going for ACT 6 puck. Is that too rough? Should I be going for the ACT Extreme clutch?

legal-z 02-23-04 05:55 AM

unless you're putting down over 400 hp, a street strip will be fine. i've heard puck clutches can be pretty rough on the street.

Don't recall the exact amount but I'm thinking less than $100. Ordered everything from Malloy including the shift select spindle thingy and both transmission seals. Add $25-$30 for good quality fluids. And, while your in there replacing your clutch etc, don't forget to order a new release fork, approx. $65.

coo coo, I'll drive it like that untill its time for me to change the clutch *evil grin*
