Power Steering return hose which to use?

I'm talking about the ones that are held on by clamps ..

I took a piece of the original , and they gave me 1/2 inch power steering line with 1300 PSI I somehow dont think those clamps will hold nearly as much .

well to the point ..

the 1/2 inch is to wide. and 3/8 to thin .

BUT the auto parts store doesnt have 7/16 in powersteering line .

can I use fuel hose for the power steering return ?

its not a matter of money its availability .. I already paid 40 dollars for a couple of feet of this stuff.. but its just to big it just flops out even with a clamp on .. it doesnt help that the powersteering hose is very rigid and doesnt compress or expand nearly as much as a regular rubber/ fuel hose does.

can I use a 7/16th fuel hose? or do i need to just keep looking for the right sized powersteering hose?

If I still had my PS, I would simply call Ray at Malloy Mazda and get the proper hose....

My next advice would be to simply remove it..... It is not needed in our light cars. The feedback is much better with manual steering. It was the fist thing I did to my FD, and I haven't looked back. So you know, you can run a A/C belt over the idler with no issues if you remove the PS.

However, if I was simply looping the line because it was removed, then I would just use a hose that fit with clamps instead of worrying about the proper OEM line. There would be no fluid to leak, or at least a small enough amount that it wouldn't leak.

A word of advise about hose type. I am not sure what kind of hose I got but it is not the right hose for power steering fluid. My fluid is literally sweating through the hose. The hose feels like it is being broken down, and is squishy to the touch.

I still need to replace it this winter. I have a fmic so my routing is custom, which is why I am using a parts store hose to begin with.

To those that say remove ps, forget about that in a dd car. It is so much better cruising down the highway with ps. I bought the car and it was removed. I put it back in and I love it.

P/S return line doesn't need to be a high presurre hose... Get a hose which will stand up against the ATF...

I would get the original Mazda hose if at all possible. It's going to be a metric size which is why the parts store hose doesn't fit.

I went through a similar issue as you with that PS line - the one that goes from the loop back to that connector. I don't think it is under heavy pressure but I could be wrong...

The PO had installed a Greddy FMIC which relocated the PS loop cooler. The hose he used was not oil tolerant and eventually swelled and burst. Unfortunately I wasn't aware of it until the hose burst in rush hour traffic an hour away from home. I wind up driving the car home that way (it was pretty much just straight ahead highway w/o turns) but the PS pump was noisier after that. Kept on driving it like that for 2 years until I eventually replaced the PS pump

Anyway, I wound up using whatever they had a NAPA and double hose clamping it. Its still on there 4 years later and doesn't seem to leak. I should probably replace it though...

If you talk to Ray about the hose before I do, post here.
