3rd Gen Mazda OEM Oil Filter change
 

Not sure if this is old news or not...

But about 1,500 to 2,000 miles ago I did an oil change got a filter etc, today I performed another oil change and noticed a few changes to the oil filter.

1. The box was no longer a flip top box, it had adhesive all around, no biggie.

2. The part of the oil filter that connects to the engine had less holes, but the holes were bigger in diameter.

3. The part inside the filter had smaller holes than the old filters design, which had bigger holes.

4. Looking straight down inside the filter there was only a flat circular spot with a silver metallic part in the middle instead of the old filter which had a circular spot with a ring inside it then a black metallic part in the center. Probably not a big deal.

5. The oil filter came with a plastic seal

Just thought I would share.

if you look at the filters they are all pretty clearly labled. there are at least 4 oem mazda made filters.

1. the crappy blue canadian one, i dont know anything about it
2. b6y1-14-302a, made in japan
3. b6y2-14-302a, mazda in the usa, i think its been discoed in favor of #4
4. b6y1-14-302-9A, the current mazdausa supplied filter, its made in europe.

I would never personaly use an OEM filter. Most people swear by them though.

I use a Mobil One M1-110. It's the one meant for the old MX-6. It's larger.

Can someone tell me if our oil filters have anti drain back valves? If they do then using filters with out them are probably not recomended? I thought most turbo'd cars would use a valve inside. I use the mobil one made for our cars.

Anti-drainback valves are necessary for oil filters mounted in a manner that can allow oil to drain out of the filter through the oil pump after engine shutdown, otherwise there is a good possibility of oil starvation upon the next start-up. Do not use an oil filter not equipped with an anti-drainback valve on your FD.
