3000k RPM idle on cold start?
 

So once in a while my FD will start and instantly shoot up to idle at 3000k RPM on cold start, is this safe for the motor to build boost right on start up in neutral? i can hear the blow off after the RPM's drop after about 8 second's at 3k. also it does this randomly like once out of ever 45 starts even in the freezing cold it does it rarely. if i blip the throttle should it go away? i also read something about starting it in gear makes this go away is it true?

blimping the throttle should get stop it, the idle may be a little higher than normal after that until it is warmed up .Also I dont believe it causes the car to build boost, never looked at my gauge when it did it.

ok i will try that next time, cause when i start it up i can hear the turbos spooling quick and afterwords the blow off goes pSHHH pretty loud and im worried something will break or get worn from cold boosting. why is it that it only happens some times? is there a sensor somewhere?

It's not building boost. There is probably more vacuum than at normal idle.
The idle seems a little high for a cold start but it should be up around 2k until it warms up then slowly drop off. If it idles normally once it's warm I would say you're alright.

It's supposed to do that. It's called the AWS lol. No harm, the RX-8 does even worse then that. I've seen it do a 5k cold start in -20 temp.

Starting it in gear will make it go away.

The AWS system is fairly easy to delete. If nothing else, the electrical connector to the AWS valve can just be disconnected. Then the valve will not open. I got rid of the valve and the air hose to it, and plugged its valve hole into the upper intake manifold. There is a separate fast idle system that can be adjusted independently of the AWS to set whatever idle speed you like (with the AWS gone).

It is set to do that for rapid warm up but I would recommend deleting the AWS since it isn't good to have the RPM shoot up on cold start

The AWS is a key part of getting the pre-cat to 'light' and start turning nasty, bad gasses into cleaner stuff. Most people delete the pre-cat for a variety of reasons, the biggest one being the thing is like a nuclear reactor when it comes to generating heat, which in turn degrades everything in the engine bay. Most owners have either deleted the AWS system or simply blip the throttle on start up. Keep in mind that even though it may SOUND hard on the engine, it is not as the rotors are only spinning a lazy 1000 rpm when the engine is at 3000 rpm.

When I had my RX-8 and it was winter timer, I would rev it to 8,000 RPM and hold it there to get it to warm up faster to get heat out of the thing. I'd just give it a few seconds for the oil to start flowing and get some heat in it. The only thing our engine needs oil for is the bearings and they get oil almost immediately. If your using the correct weighted oil for your climate, a simple 3,000 RPM has zero harm to the engine at all.

Now on the other hand, my Nissan Pathfinder has a 1,200 RPM cold start and it takes 2 seconds for the oil to hit the cams or whatever. I can actually hear things start to clank louder and louder until the oil hits everything and it goes silent. I'm using the winter weight oil too LOL.
