2nd turbo rebuild smoking again! what now?
 

So I've completely lost any faith in Turbonetics ability to rebuild turbos. This is the second rebuild from them in 3 months and they're blowing smoke out the back again. But, the REAL question now is what should I do? Rebuild through someone else, or go brand new?

The second rebuild was 'warranty-worked', so I'm tempted to throw it back at them with the same provisions as last time. First time, they lasted 1 month. Second time, they lasted two months. Should I even bother giving them a third opportunity?

I'm relatively close to Majestic Turbo, so I'm wondering if I should just say 'screw the shop' and send them to Majestic myself.

Give Bryan at BNRSupercars a ring - his webpage is at the top of the page and he does well with rebuilds. I've heard mad things about Turbonetics with 3rd gen turbos. Bryan charges $700-750 for a rebuild and ported wastegate

They're probably rebuilding the same bad core over and over again. If you have cracks in the manifold then the rebuilds aren't going to last. If they'll rebuild it for free under warrenty, maybe you can ask them to check out the manifold when they open it up and look for cracks. If there are cracks, try and source a blown set with a good manifold and give them that instead. Not all turbos are rebuildable.

I have a quick additional question. My shop has been "re-ringing" the exhaust manifold; that is, they've been over-sizing the ring to the exhaust manifold. Is this going to contribute to the turbos going bad earlier? If it's a good thing, then I will continue to have it done.

Anybody know?
