2JZ-GTE or 13B-REW

Alright guys, here's the dilema. My engine is at 71K, and I'm starting to save for the rebuild. My engine still pulls hard and, despite a low boost problem I have yet to diagnose, I don't see a problem just yet. However, when I do have to put in a new engine, I've wondering about the possibilities of using a 2JZ from a Supra instead of a new 13B. I've heard that 2JZ's are practically bullet-proof, and I have seen one "Supra-7". I'm just wondering if any of you know how extensive this transition is, or should I just stay rotory? Any info would be great. Thanks.

please do a search and then go from there..

mazdaspeed00 07-14-02 04:46 PM

doing a 2JZ swap will cost ou about 4 or 5 rebuilt 13b engines. stick with the 13b

jspecracer7 07-15-02 04:59 AM

EXTENSIVE FABRICATION IS REQUIRED

93TTRX7 07-15-02 05:22 AM

yeah like a disgusting hood

If you're just saving for a rebuild, then maybe you shouldn't consider extensive modification unless you are a skilled fabricator and therefore don't have to farm the work out.

This isn't even going into the arguments why the Supra engine sucks ass for anything but a tank of a car like, say, a Supra :) (ducking flames)

r_ed_line53 07-15-02 09:25 AM

think!

you're defeating the purpose of what an "RX-7 IS ALL ABOUT". It's a rotary, that's what makes it an RX-7. When and if the new one comes out, it will be fitted with a ROTARY motor!!!!!! That is what makes our 7's unique amongst other things, like the forever always looking new look (run on). n e wayz, my 2 senses.

see ya,

I sure hope this doesn't start the "what if I put a V-10 in my rx7" or "will a V-12 fit?"

Just stick with the rotary ;)

ThirdGenRX7 07-15-02 09:53 AM

I wanna convert my rx7 to flintstones power baby! i'm gonna take out the engine and cut some holes in the floor!

Now that's being innovative :)

stick with the 13B... That is the whole point of having a RX7, because it has a rotary engine!

How much do the supra engines cost, my guess a lot more than a 13b rebuild, besides that would be an expensive journey since you would need a new tranny, and a lot of work. Also do any one know how fast that yellow RX-7 with the supra engine in it from Turbo Magazine?

peejay 07-15-02 10:41 AM

There is much more to the RX-7 than the engine. Looks, handling, practicality (go on, just try to move across town in an MR2)... to say that the rotary is the whole point of owning an RX-7 is a very myopic viewpoint.

But the Supra engine... SHEESH. Doesn't that thing weigh 700+lb? Inline sixes are typically very heavy engines, especially ones like it which are designed to cope with very high stress from turbocharging. They are also rather hard to package, what with their height and length. BMW may switch to V6 engines in the near future for this reason alone.

Bruceman 07-15-02 10:42 AM

No, no, no.....
The 2JZ will bolt right up!

Go for it!

Last time I saw it....hmm...it had about as much power as thirdgenrx7's flintstones ride. It was not complete and I don't know if it is still in the same shape as it was then.

anybody know the conversion for foot power to horsepower?

You guys are crazy...

RedX7 07-15-02 09:14 PM

Good point guys! Why the hell did I buy this thing in the first place if I didn't want to be different?! I'm sticking with the 13B! Screw the archaic reciprocating piston engine. Rotory 4 life!

Easy guys... just kidding. ;)

Short life? Maybe? But if I planned on living forever, I'd buy an Accord and never go above 60mph.

Nah with your mods... you should be fine for a long while. Keep an eye on that radiator though... a new Mazdaspeed radiator would help keep your motor happy for many miles. My stock one simply cracked one day... thank god I wasn't driving. Whoever spec'd a radiator with plastic in it should be shot!

Don't mind me... I just like talking a little smack every now and then. :)
