23 MPG Highway

It is possible :) Just got back from Indy, filled up and calculated. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that proper tuning can get some good numbers on the drag strip and on the highway, and you're silly not to tune for both.

(I should've included a calculation of miles per gallon of coolant as well:()

Spool Up 05-03-04 01:06 AM

that's impressive. I just did a calculation today too of pure highway miles. Got 17.8mpg. I know my car runs rich though, so hopefully i can tune it out this summer if i have some time. What afr's are you tuning to at cruise? What's your average city milage?

Fatman0203 05-03-04 01:18 AM

I got 25 ish driving my car from North Carolina which is where i bought it. The weather was cool so that may have helped a bit.

neit_jnf 05-03-04 01:40 AM

I got 35mpg fron Chicago to SE Michigan going 70mph with cruise control...

oh wait! This was on my Protege5 oops! j/k ;)

twinturboteddy 05-03-04 02:09 AM

did 18.5mpg last week.

I make more power than stock too =D

you eat a coolant seal?

Hyperite 05-03-04 11:15 AM

The jury is still out on the coolant seal, but it's looking that way.

AFRs at cruise are in the mid 15s, and I was cruising at 85 MPH.

Mods are Full exhaust, PFS Intercooler, and AEM ECU.

Railgun 05-03-04 12:16 PM

Better hope that motor lasts until at LEAST our first cruise!

turbojeff 05-03-04 12:20 PM

I generally get 21-23mpg on the highway.

911GT2 05-03-04 12:20 PM

Isn't Steve Kan shooting for 26-27 mpg for the SCC tuner car challenge?

0110-M-P 05-03-04 12:28 PM

I got 18 mpg for an entire tank of gas on my TO4R FD. I was impressed. But that doesn't make up enough for my 8-9 mpg in the city.

XSTransAm 05-03-04 12:31 PM

isnt mid 15's too lean?

Railgun 05-03-04 12:57 PM

If you're not under load, I wouldn't think so.

Hyperite 05-03-04 12:57 PM

Steve and I talked last night, he shoots for the 16s at cruising, but that becomes undrivable for me because of the surging (he didn't seem to mind). I wouldn't doubt 27 MPG is doable.

ROTORHP 05-03-04 01:09 PM

I have got 27 mpg in my car. Was doing about 120km/hr(70-75 mph for you non-metric type guys;) ). Thats what the calculator told me. The calculator might be in imperial gallons instead of us gallons however....:)

skunks 05-03-04 01:10 PM

i have seen 30mpg in a fd before so its not impossible that this is correct. it was in a bone stock 93 fd with about 60-70k on the original engine

ROTORHP 05-03-04 01:17 PM

I was thinking that having the K&N, DP and catback that it made the engine a little more efficient.:) I'm liking the mileage none the less....:D

spoolin93r1 05-03-04 01:28 PM

i've gotten 22-25 on several occasions. you just have to learn how to keep your foot out of it. i've also gone through 4 gallons of gas within a 45 minute period, giving people rides in my car.

typically i get around 15-16 with mixed driving. not too bad for a streetport and a t78

wonder1and 05-03-04 02:08 PM

best I've gotten is about 18.5 on a long distance cruise at a constant 80mph... citywise I'm at 14mpg w/o doing any load on the motor... past that I'm about 4mpg :D

I so feel your pain. My highway miles arent bad, but the problem is i dont drive enough highway only miles for that to matter. The last average i did was about 12-14 mpg because of city stop and go + highway driving.

racerfoo 05-03-04 06:50 PM

i averaged 22 last week, city and highway..but i was babying it. the week before i averaged 19. im trying to drive it a little easier now...shooting for 25. gas prices are getting so high!

but this will change when the ecu gets switched and the boost goes up :( :)

fd3virgin 05-03-04 07:06 PM

seem like i get around 12.

TracyRX7 05-03-04 07:18 PM

I averaged about 17mpg on my FD for a month of commuting in it and some spirited driving. I'm hoping with a PFC here soon I can optimize those AFR so I'm not running rich and also get more efficient use of the potential HP.

MAZDASPEEDFD 05-05-04 03:52 AM

I've gotten 25mpg doing ~60mph from San Diego to LA. I just let the cruise control do all the accelerating so my RPM's stayed really low. It's pretty hard to do when everyone is tailing you and cutting you off. F#@K 'EM, they don't pay for my gas!

Hyperite
your car was a pain in the ass to tune. You guys were sitting at idle for like 20 minutes in the parking lot. I almost fell alseep :)
