2002 Mazda RX-7 Type-A Spirit-R

Does anyone know if you can get a car cheaper then what Motorex charges to import the vehicle from Japan to USA? I dont want the car "legalized" for every day driving, as I can do it for cheaper then what they can also. But you cant find a Type-A Spirit-R in America, so my only choice is to import it. Id gladly pay 30k or more for the car itself, but another 30-50k just to import it is rediculous.

fsae_alum 03-01-06 12:49 PM

The only thing that I would trust Motorex to do is bend me over and give it to me hard. A whole lot of people in the Skyline community have learned just how adept Motorex is at playing that role to a tee. One word of advice on what to do when doing business with them.............RUN.

DaleClark 03-01-06 12:51 PM

I've heard similar things as well.

Really, I'd just find a nice, clean, low-mileage 93-95 car, then buy all the parts to update it to the later Spirit R look - the new wing, nose, etc. That will cost you a LOT less money, and you'll have a car that's legal to drive on the streets right from the get-go.

Very good direction Dale. SR Motorsports has a bone stock 93 advertised for sale on their site that only has 20K original miles. Might be a good place to start. :)

Gamezilla 03-01-06 02:08 PM

What if the guy just wants a Spirit R to have a Spirit R. What you're suggesting would be like buying an Integra, then painting it yellow and putting Everything on it to make it a Type R look-alike. Kinda defeats the point. Its not like the Type R is that great, but owning it means you own one of a few cars (a collectable). This guy might not want an everyday run of the mill 7 that LOOKS like a spirit R. Maybe he wants a collectable. Thats really what the Spirit R was made to be anyways.

As for getting one - good luck. Doing it all yourself is the only cheap way, but its lots of trouble. I guess you could buy the car in Japan, rip it to pieces, import it all in seperate chunks, then re-assemble it in the states. Isnt that basically what Motorex does anyways?

Herblenny 03-01-06 02:12 PM

I've heard Spirit R is hard to find in Japan. And it might be more than 30K just to buy one in Japan.

Coene-RX7 03-01-06 02:14 PM

Yea, I never planned on doing business w/ Motorex, thats why im looking for a much cheaper alternative- a more trustworthy alternative at that. And I am pretty deadset on getting an original '02 Type-A Spirit-R, although if I cant find a way, my next option is a Bathurst, which is hard to find in the States also, but very do-able. (And pretty much what Gamezilla said.)

afgmoto1978 03-01-06 02:20 PM

Plus it has 7 years of engineering fine tuning, like a totally revised and improve suspension, abs, chassis stiffness, brakes, RZ recaro seats, electronics and materials used in general.

See if you can import an RZ via Canada?

I wouldn't say its hard to find.. its impossible to find. NO Spirit R or Bathurst were ever imported to the states. Not even thru Motorex. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Mazdabation 03-01-06 03:40 PM

Nor Canada.........

You might want to check out this web site and/or contact them. Maybe they can help you find what you're looking for:

Quote from j-garage.com

If you are in the US :
This is information about importing the JDM car into the US.

As you may know, all the Japanese specifications vehicles (JDM car) are Right Hand Drive. Unfortunately, it is difficult to import JDM cars into the US at present except the 25 years or older model, race cars, show cars, and kit cars. It is because you have to obtain the approval from the DOT and the EPA in order to import the JDM car and it needs to legalize a car when it will reach to the US port.

Let me advise you that unless you wish to present crash test data for any Right Hand Drive car, it cannot legally be imported to the US. This is prohibitively expensive as a vehicle must be crashed to obtain the data, and we do not support the crash test data. Also the JDM car probably do not meet the US emission standard. And after 1996 models probably need to install the OBD2 system in order to pass the emission standard.

For your information, here is a link of the US importing information.
EPA : http://www.epa.gov/otaq/imports/quikover.htm
DOT : http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/
US customs : http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/xp/cgov/import/

As of Oct 2003 the only RHD JDM allowed for import into US is 1990-1999 Skyline GTS GTR. The vehicle must go to US conversion company (est 8k-18k USD) to meet US DOT standards. And you have to give them a returnable "bond" of 150% of vehicle value until conversion is done. If you get caught with an illegal one on the roads it will be confiscated and destroyed at your cost.

NOTE : We J's Garage Export do not support any import procedure. The buyer is responsible for any necessary procedures, or any transfers, or any modifications for them to import the car.

afgmoto1978 03-01-06 04:25 PM

Well import an RZ as parts, put a firewall of a 93-95 on the 02 and register it as a 93-95 with everything else 02. A lot of work, but it would be cool non the less.

Coene-RX7 03-01-06 04:26 PM

Honestly im kinda worried about the hole "Legalizing" thing, I want the car to stay true to its Japanese origin, right hand steering and all. I wonder if theres a way around it. Thanks for the link, ArmitageGVR4. They have an '03 Bathurst for sale that I will definately look into for sure, if I can find a way around having to tear apart the car to make it like an everyday US version.

dgeesaman 03-01-06 04:34 PM

Good luck. Numerous people have come on the board with a similar goal and story, and precisely zero have provided any follow-up evidence to suggest they succeeded.

To do it entirely above the books appears to not be legal, seeing as the car would fail many state inspections, or doesn't match the 93-95 US FDs close enough to slide in on that.

OK! I seen an INFINI/RX-7 brand new at Projekt7 in Daytona bch. just yesterday, it had 11 miles on the odmeter, thats right eleven miles, give them a call its in the phone book, try to talk to Jerry he runs the place.

DaiOni 03-01-06 05:44 PM

For f@cks sake. The Bathurst version is a CHEAP, LOW-SPEC rx-7.

go here and look at the prices: http://www.rx7.net.nz/fd-jp-models.html

ronbros: it's EFINI, and if it was an EFINI it wouldn't be in 'miles'

I am now figuring that its more costly than what I am expecting, and much harder too, while I wont be getting fully what I want for the money I would pay. In your opinions what do you think is the best 3rd Gen. RX7, year-type-etc... (that is buyable in the US)

rotaryinspired 03-01-06 06:17 PM

here is one that is in the states.

You might want to contact them.

Don't give up, You can do it...

IF there is a will, there is a way.
It seems that you have the "want" and "$$$" to do so.

Alot of people have come and gone, just asking if they could
import one here or not. But none seemed serious.

I tell you what. If some how some way, you do bring over a Spirit R
here to the STATES. YOU WILL BE THE ENVY OF THE WHOLE U.S.
RX7 COMMUNITY. bar none.

Even the guys with 8 second 1000HP 3 rotor FD's, would be in awe.

You would have the ONLY 2002 FD SPIRIT R, in NORTH AMERICA.

more exclusive than Ferrari's, porsches and Lambo's..

rotaryinspired 03-01-06 07:54 PM

There is already one in the states. look above.

NuTbAgSaN 03-01-06 09:01 PM

i am by no means an expert...but i notice a lot of spirit r`s and such are sold by various australian import companies. perhaps theres a way to work something out with them to ship it to you?

as far as i know, street legal is not gonna happen. but if you want the car that may be worth looking into.
