2 spring washers popped out while removing transmission

hey guys, I was removing FD transmission with exedy twin clutch and 2 spring washers (attached picture of one) popped out and dropped on the garage floor as the transmission separated from the engine. It was very difficult to separate the transmission and I think the snap ring re-engaged while I was wiggling the transmission to get it off. I'm just guessing... anyway, the snap rings looks fine... throwout bearing also looks okay superficially.. nothing seems off.... I can't figure out where they came from... can you help? thanks!

look like someone was rebuilding the shifter and dropped one inside the hole? and when you removed the trans it just fell out

thanks for the reply. I installed the transmission last time and haven't touched the shifter. you're right in that it does look like the shifter spring.. but it's larger in diameter.. is there nothing within the bellhousing that uses spring washer? I'm okay with theory that they fell into bellhousing somehow in the past... I just want to make sure that it's not from the TO bearing or clutch before I put them together again :) thanks again.

Using an aftermarket wedge collar? Wave washers are used on them.

Also a large ~ 2" OD selective shim is behind the input shaft bearing - if someone has misplaced that while replacing the bellhousing.

That was my 1st thought as well.

yea those are exactly it! my snap ring (wedge collar?) is whatever comes with the "stock" exedy twin disc.

I checked with exedy, and they said rx7 clutch doesn't come with them stock, so I'm guessing someone installed them along the way? When I was wiggling the transmission out, the snap ring re-engaged the TO bearing and everything popped out together.

do I need these spring washers? I just bought new snap rings because it looked little bent out of shape. thanks!

You are going to want to check the clutch pressure plate fingers where the wedge collar inserts for damage as well.

Sounds like the wedge collar re-engaged and then was forced off the pressure plate?

Would be a shame to get the engine and trans together again and have the wedge collar not stay in the pressure plate because there is some damage there.

good call. The pressure plate looks ok. with the new ring, it seems to engage perfectly.

so do you think those spring washers were installed by someone in the past? do I even need them?

BLUE TII 01-16-17 08:31 PM

Well, does your wedge collar look like the stock one on the Left in the pic above or the aftermarket one on the Right that uses the wavy washers?

stickmantijuana 01-16-17 09:01 PM

it's stock one.
