1993 RX-7 w/ Rebuilt Motor/Trans for $16k, worth it?

Well, there is this one RX-7 around here with a rebuilt motor (from Mazda w/ a warranty) that has 1,500 miles on it (67k miles on the car) and a rebuilt tranny. The guy is asking $16k, but I'm sure I can get him down a little more. Now, with 67k on the rest of the driveline/suspension/turbos, do you think it would be a good idea to pick this up? Thanks.

You wont find much lower miles for that price, and if you do it's the original motor. I think it's fair, it's hard to find a good one for any cheaper than that.

Make sure that person is able to prove the new engine and rebuilt tranny by showing you real receipts. Whether its worth it or not depends on the condition of the rest of the car. $16k is not exactly a steal, especially if its bone stock.

Look in the For Sale section here on the club and see what others are selling theirs for. Also check out cars.com and autotrader.com for other cars.

Good luck.

Yeah, this might fall through like the Cobra deal, I'm not gonna get my hopes up.

that is a good price, a little lower would put tip the odds to be a little more even.. the warrenty makes it most appealing, here is the math.... warranty + RX-7 = extremely happy owner YOU

compression check!!!!!!! get it done. look for oil residue in the intercooler as well as oil on the snails of the turbos.

If the car is in good shape and everything checks out, 16K sounds like a very fair price.

EDIT: you are in cali

I found another...

"1993 MAZDA RX7, touring pkg, 5 spd, ac, stereo, snrf, fully loaded, less than 100 mi on new eng, turbos, clutch, plugs, wires, batt, etc, new 17" whls, tires, $16,500."

I called him and asked him about it, and it sounded like he took really good care of it. Also, I carfaxed it, and it came out clean. I did forget to as him if he had the papers to the rebuild, but I will ask him tomorrow. He also mentioned that the car is no longer registered (as of 3 months ago) as he has too many vehicles to register/insure. Should this be a concern?

Anyone?

What are the total miles. You still need to verify compression.

WaLieN 08-14-03 09:20 PM

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 85k, total; a few hundred on the new motor/turbo/trans. The guy said the motor (rebuilt w/ 3mm apex seals) was built by either "Rotory Power" or "Rotor Performance" in California; I hear it is a reputable shop. Given that he has reciepts, should I still compression test it? If so, I guess I should go to AutoZone and buy a cheap-o compression checker.

no you should not be checking the engine. you need to take it to a good rotary shop, pay the 150$ if you are serious and have them inspect it.
