1993 FD R1 rebuild project - your input welcom

Hi all

Finally I managed to get the pics where they are supposed to be...please let me know what you consider doing with the wreck: For parts or rebuilding?

The car has about 58'000miles (94'000km) on it and the interior is quite flawless.

If you think I should rebuild it then please let me know what parts you think I should get.

Your inputs are most welcome!

Well fix/new fenders, nice vented hood, radiator & aluminum AST, upgraded (or FMIC) IC, open intake, new front with R1 or 99 front lip or '99 spec, fender lamps if you need them, badges...rims, lose the wing or get one that looks good with 99 spec front...paint

of course any other mods that seem like fun...I think it can be rebuilt if the frame isn't bent

RuffRyder 01-06-04 01:20 PM

R u planning on makign ti a fun experiment liek a project car? or do u just want it to run? If the case is u just want it to run just go to rx7store.net and order the stage 3 engine..will run u about $4,000 but u will be running really fast and u dont have to worry about anything its all done for u...only need it installed

Roar 629 01-06-04 01:30 PM

good luck.. :) fix all the bented frame first..

devlman 01-06-04 01:30 PM

More importantly, how did you manage to find a Montego Blue R1?

RX7WEEE 01-06-04 01:47 PM

thats no R1 it has a sun roof. But then again it's a European RX-7 and I dont know if they had R1s with sun roofs there. God luck on the project man. Get ridof the rats nest and go for a single turbo.

With 58k on it looks like a rebuild coming soon on the motor. Do it right the first time and put a LS1/T56 in it and make it reliable.

My $.02

!?Yea right, why would you need a rebuild soon with 58k miles ?!

Apparently your version of 'doing it right' is vastly different from most of the rest of us on this forum..

I myself would not call your idea doing it right.

Coolant water seals.... do you own an FD??

Seems like fixing the body work is going to be quite a project. If you have some experience with doing bodywork, I would say that it could be a worthwhile project. If you will have to pay for all of the repairs, it could easily run 8-10 thousand dollars (american).

Fixing the body damage, and getting it running should be done before considering mods.

turbojeff 01-06-04 03:32 PM

Simple fix. That has less damage than my car had. You'll need to buy the bucket that goes around the headlight and the core support (around $200 US). The frame rail is pushed over a little but it looks fixable.

Check out the pics of the parts I bought new from Mazda. They are available new, it isn't worth using old parts. I would be looking for a used stock hood and bumper assy as they are pretty spendy new.

I see dual oil coolers see me thinks its an R1

It's not a US vehicle so it does not follow US model colors.

kingcornflake 01-06-04 04:21 PM

Hi again

Wow...that much answers in such little time. I am impressed :p:

@dubulup

If ever I am planning to get a JDM 99 front as well as a spoiler. No mods on the engine...originally I was planning to mod it to JDM 99 standard (280hp) but there is quite a lot which is different to a 93...

@ruffryder, 95FD_VA, devlman, rx7wee

As I live in Switzerland we have very severe regulations...a single turbo would not pass. Even with mild mods like DP and CB I have on my silver FD R1 I definitely have to trick n'cheat to make them pass :bash:

We had only one version ever imported to Europe and that is R1/R2 with full equipment means sunroof, cruise control, 2x oilcoolers, stiffer ride etc. The colors were vintage red, silver, montegoblue and black. Other colors weren't available.

@Roar629

I already examined the frame...it shouldn't be a too bad fix ;)

kingcornflake 01-06-04 04:28 PM

@adam c

The bodywork should not be a problem...means after you guys encouraged me to keep the car as a rebuild project :noyes:

@turbojeff

Thx for your link! I'll check that out...this is also making me think not to use it for parts :drool:

Well, you're on the band wagon awful quick. Just yesterday you couldn't decide whether to put an lt1 or an LS1 in your car, and today you're advising people to put a V8 in their car to"fix" it? And another gleeful thread about how you won't be having any more rotary related problems? That seems like a surefire recie for rubbing people the wrong way.

Don't get me wrong. I'm happy with the way my swap turned out, but I'm also not going around advising people to swap out their drivetrain. It's a little tougher than just changing your oil.

Anyhow, I know you're excited about your upcoming swap, but maybe you should wait until you've at least seen/ridden in/ or built your LS1 converted car before you endorse it as a magic cureall for all of the FD's ailments. All you're doing right now is forcing your opinion on other people and pissing them off.

That's my $.02

Agreed!!!

EDIT: linked pic.... hmmm doesn't seem to work. It's the last one.

SNracing 01-06-04 09:38 PM

the front of that car took quite a beating. the frame looks fixable though. a good interor is hard to find, and pertty expensive to restore. id just fix yours. rebuilding the outside of the car is more fun than the interor.

911GT2 01-06-04 09:56 PM

I say fix it. As long as the engine is running right now, leave it for the time being. But it looks fixable, I know turbojeff would tackle it in half a heartbeat.

"coolant water seals....Do you own an FD?"
Ive only had my FD for 3yrs now, but my first motor went 99k mi before it let go, Ive got a Pettit motor now & I would expect it to go just as far... My FC had 160k mi and I still sold it after the car was totaled, Ive got a freind with an FB running like 175k mi and it still pulls decent. I think rotaries will last if you treat them right...

devlman 01-07-04 08:09 AM

Yeah, I totally missed that you are in Europe. Makes sense now :).
