198hp?!? Missing 57hp!!!

Ok I put my FD on a dyno this weekend only to find out that she was only kicking 198hp. I've decided that she needs a tune-up and new vac lines but what else? I want her as close to 255hp as possible without performance parts.

What was the temp, altitude, and your mods?

mazdaspeed00 09-23-02 10:42 PM

well the 255hp your taking about is measured at the flywheel. u might be looking at 195 RWHP on your dyno sheet. might wanna double check that. but i believe stock 7 put out around 215-225 at the wheels stock.

spooledUP7 09-23-02 10:42 PM

255 is crankshaft HP. Your 198 is at the wheels. Yes, a tune up should get you over 200.

Are you sure they didn't give you "rwhp" = Rear Wheel Horse Power?

Most stock FD's are around 210-220 rwhp, so you aren't that far off...

Just start off with the normal maintenance things:

1. Check your boost pattern. Make sure you are getting the proper 10-8-10:

2. Change the spark plugs, fuel filter, air filters, tranny oil, etc...

paw140 09-23-02 10:43 PM

The 255 hp is at the crank, and you measured 198 at the rear wheels. Your probably missing more like 15 or 20 hp, not 57. Start with new plugs, wires, air filter, oil, vac lines, usual tune up stuff.

Shit, four people beat me to it as I was typing! 5 posts in 2 minutes ;)

kwikrx7 09-23-02 10:45 PM

actually your FD is only missing about 12-22 hp - dyno numbers are calculated in rear-wheel horsepower and most stock FDs pull down between 210 and 220 rwhp. 198 rwhp is still weak - but not awful - change your plugs and wires, do the vacuum lines - and maybe you can pull some better numbers

mazdaspeed00 09-23-02 10:47 PM

heh i win!!!!!

oh, guess i shoulda said thanks with that too so... thanks

I suspect low secondary boost and maybe a slipping clutch. 220 RWHP is a good number to shoot for in a stock manual tranny FD.

If you have a boost guage check to see if your running the 10-8-10 boost pattern, that is if your running sequential. If your having problems with boost then go Non sequential!!

Kiflin 09-24-02 06:30 AM

You need to get it tuned
