14PSI & stock motor = ?
 

Is 14PSI too much for a stock FD motor considering the fuel system & intercooler have been upgradded?

Walbro pump, 1300cc secondaries, Power FC, IC, DP, CB, non-platinum 9's all around... Oh, & I torqued the sandwich bolts when I did the clutch.

14psi is safe since you have an upgraded intercooler.

what does the intercooler have anything to do
with it.....?

Im not sure but from what i've read before the stock intercooler only safe for 13psi...!!

I belive what it is is that the more you pressureize the air the hotter it gets, and the stock IC cooling capabilities arn't enough to run 14 PSI w/o risking detonation.......I think.

i think the correct word you are looking for is " efficient"

The stock ic is fine for short bursts. It does not, however, cool efficiently enough for extended high boost runs.

The stock motor can handle 14psi no problem. These engines are stronger than people give them credit for, its the tuning that is vital. I run 18psi everyday, I would even feel comforatable running 20psi, but after that you would want race fuel to keep from detonating.

Denny's got it right...14+ more boost and that's a lot of heat for the stock turbos to be efficient.

sure some people dyno running 16-18 pounds...but they are definately shorting their life span

Oh yeah, and I don't suggest running more than 14 psi on stock turbos, like the others have stated.

I was told by some that anything over 12PSI would damage the oil control seals, but there's no upgrade for those anyhow...

I think where most people run into problems is running the stock or near stock fuel system at 14PSI. With the Pettit or M2 ECU that boost level would push the injectors open at a 99% injector duty cycle.

I completely agree with the high charge temps causing pre-ignition... That's why I upgradded the IC.

So, I guess I better start doing some tunning in the higher boost cells.

I would run no more than 13 to 14 psi on stock turbos! they can stay in good shae at these levels, also to note you must get a ecu upgrade to run safe! stock turbos can handle a small amount of 16 to 18 psi runs but you must and I stress you must have your car tuned for that kinda of power but I would not suggest it. I think it is too much abuse on the turbos and risk a chance of throwing a blade in the motor at worst case. but to answer your question YES you can run 14psi on the stock turbos and as for the motor they can handle some serious power i have heard of guys that run 22psi on single setups on stock motors!!! dont know if ya can but that is what I hear. just my .02

basically, running too high of a boost curve will over load the stock turbos, and then they become weak and VERY inefficient. they will become heatsoaked and be more debitrimental than helpful. however, 14psi is ok on st. twins. it is when you push the envelope of 16 and upwards that you will experience these problems...

what's so stupid about it? he's right...you're gonna need a good IC for cooling. I don't give a crap how high octane you're running without a good IC YOU WILL DETONATE.
