What Holds Your License Plate On?
 

i just have some rusty bolts, and my usual go to, the parts manual doesn't specify anything. what do you have?

Some "Ti" color anodized Aluminum motorcycle fairing fastners. They have a little 8mm flanged head instead of usual 10mm head.

Pretty sure I used what was handy, which was the #3 Phillips bolts used in computer server racks.

Since my FD doesn’t see any bad weather anymore, the standard bolts that came with it are still holding up after all these years. :)

I painted the heads satin black to match a license plate frame, and since they go into captured nuts I use just a little antiseize. :dunno:

Im actually up in a temperate rainforest region on the coast at the tip of california and drive to and race in Central Oregon.

I do drive and race in the rain, but the car is garaged and more time spent admirimg and caring for it than driving it, so I will notice if the anodize layer is compromised and nondesirable oxidization takes over.

When I gave up on my FC and parked it outside for a couple years every spot that was touched by tire rub love, course-out love, bodyshop love and late night wrench tap love under the hood sprouted rust like it was a local specialty crop.

On my FD build I used plastic, Aluminum and Titanium fastners in many places where allowed by race class rules mainly cause people who know will spot it and give that nod.

I do understand a couple pounds weight isnt going to make a real difference.

If you treat your car like a well cared for motorcycle the motorcycle fastners are an OK idea.

If your worried about corrosion and the fastner is NOT threading into metal, you could use the heavier Titanium fastners. If your not worried about someone ripping off your license plate you can use lighter Nylon fastners.

You can use really heavy stainless fastners too. I hate that the hardware store stainless is going to have a "shared" standard/metric head (7mm, 13mm etc)- so, find metric metric stainless and order that online.

Used some high grade ARP chromed 12pt fastners cause they look cool, but do not materially weigh less than stock.

I used stainless steel bolts from West Marine, which is right up the street from me. It's a great resource for stuff like hoses and clamps, nuts and bolts, etc.
