In my position I would only have to pay:
Initial cost, import to canada, canada oop/vi, and finally 13% based on the bill of sale. (We all know everyone writes lower receipts to help eachother).
My final price is 38,872. Virtually 1/2 of what you listed...
We all find what we're looking for...if we want it to be expensive, we will find valid ways to say it's expensive.

I love you!! no homo.....but as a buyer for the FD I have seen countless requests for 30k+ and everything you just wrote is exactly what goes through my mind. So hard to make the decision to throw 30k at the car when you KNOW you will have to dump more. regardless of how "mint" the seller says it is....so hard to find a down to earth seller.
I am in the works of looking at a couple this weekend. I had a seller drop his *DAMAGED* touring package from 35k to 28k and I still had to back out. It was too costly with the known repairs I had to do up front.
Amazing post my friend,
+1 from me,
Cheers

Paying even 20k for a 25 year old car isn't an easy thing to do because it will need continual maintenance and lets face it cars today have lots of power, well put together interiors, nice creature comforts etc...etc...
That said the well is drying up so for those on the fence this may be your last chance at finding a decent FD.
Good luck to all the buyers but stop waiting and pull the trigger and ENJOY the greatest sports car ever built

So for a 25 yr old car, what is everyone's definition of low mileage?
I bought my 99% original FD about a year ago with 55k miles. All the right mods, JDM down pipe, FC fan switch, R1 appearance pkg. For me that was a low mileage, stock car but I bought it with the intention of driving it and enjoying it and not parking it. I wanted a 'low mileage' car so I had the peace of mind that nobody else had the opportunity to ruin it. Just wondering how it's value will evolve as I continue to drive it occasionally (about 2-3k miles per yr).

My example is the cost from a US buyers point of view considering you can not bring in a year 2000 car until it is 25 years old. If you buy now you have to cover storage cost, and eight lost opportunity cost on the funds you use for your initial investment, before you can get it into your hands in the USA.
Obviously it may not make sense to buy and wait eight years. But it is not unheard of. Meanwhile someone is prepared to pay $32,000 now. I just wonder who it is? If there are US buyers, my model shows what their value expectation might be for eight years from now.

@gr8scott... 55,000 miles is relatively low miles for an FD today. There are some with 10,000 miles. Some with 20-25,000. But, anything under maybe 70,000 miles is probably considered reasonably low miles by most of us. And, the R1 package is really more about performance differences than appearance. Dual oil coolers, front strut bar, and slightly stiffer suspension.

For the record I bought mine from Jturbo here on the forum last April.

Price them right and these cars sell incredibly fast for 25 year old sports cars.

James did a phenomenal job maintaining and documenting this car and it shows...I've kept in contact with him updating him as I fix the small things that need fixing, and while I get it professionally tuned.
I've had about 5 different FDs at varying points in my life, and this is the one that I was always chasing after, so it will never be for sale. I always had a ******* sunroof or moonroof and/or tan interior, so having extra headroom and black interior that all fits together is the best feeling.
Demand is strong for GOOD ones. My 94 CW was sold last year within a week at my asking price, after sifting through tons of texts of bullshit, of course.
Hell, my Supra has been sitting in a garage, undriven.

I love that you guys were discussing this car, as I am the one that picked it up. I sold my last 94 CW more than a year ago because I always wanted an R1/R2 so I have kept my eye open, inspecting about 10 different FDs that I came across in the past year at varying price points. Since I'm super picky, I rejected all of them, even after flying across the country to check one.

Yep, but there is a rare deal every month and until the rare deals dry up people won't pay 30k.
Keep checking and you'll see the same cars. Autotrader is not the place to sell an FD. This forum is by far the best place to buy and sell parts and cars.
Yep, another cough cough rare deal
I've just spent some time on Autotrader and Car Gurus and am beginning to wonder if some here aren't deluding themselves about how relatively inexpensive the FD still is today. Asking prices are not selling prices, but the asking prices are way higher than they were 2 years ago. Many cars in the mid-$30's and all but a few of the rest in the $20's. I'd bet the cheapest place to buy a nice on is right here, because everyone has been led to believe the prices are still below $20. No wonder 50k mile cars sell here for $17-18 really quickly.
Looks like this one sold fast!

Let's not forget Jeff's car (another rare deal)

This will be the next nice FD sold (I predict 25 or 26k price). The others will sit unless the sellers lower their price

The price this year is 20 to 25k.
I noticed the VR R2 with 24k miles is no longer on Autotrader. It's been for sale for a long time. Either taken off the market or sold. List price was 34k. That car may have been a 30k FD.

Where do you see them? I hadn't been looking hard (since I couldn't afford/house/justify a second FD). But, that was the best deal I've seen in a good while. Seems like people are finding some on CL.

I still have 4 FDs so don't really have space and my time is more and more limited but I love playing with these cars.

I know this is more of a high end sales thread but this caught my eye.
RHD Canadian car
25 years old
legal to import in to the US
engine rebuilt not long ago
needs a good cleaning and a bit of TLC
1992 Mazda Rx7 Efini RHD | used cars & trucks | Saskatoon | Kijiji
BTW $7800 CAD is $6000USD. I've seen rhd shells listed for $5000USD+ on FB pages.
It'd be a nice pick up for me if I weren't on the other side of the country.
EDIT:
Just saw these two. Both by the same seller.
It's in french so I'll translate it:
1990 Cosmo for sale 13B-RE
86,000KM (54,000 miles)
$8000 CAD ($6100USD)
Car modified in Japan. Several modifications done. Turbo, diff, etc.. Car works very well. More powerful than an RX-7 FD of the same age. A few body/paint imperfections.
http://www.kijiji.ca/v-autos-camions...ationFlag=true
1992 Cosmo for sale 20B
84,000KM (53,000mies)
$15000CAD ($11500USD)
Almost all original with the exception of BC coilovers and 19" wheels from an RX-8 R3. Car is an excellent condition. Was was repainted three years ago. Equipped with TV screen & GPS. Less than 8000 produced and only a few left in the world. I can include many additional pieces with the car for the right price.

Why mess with JDM RHD junk when there are good junkers here in the states.
Every 3 months or so there is some junker/deal on the forum, craigs list etc....
They usually sell in 1 or 2 days.
I almost bought this one and I think DJ bought it.
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...stock-1113499/
The problems with cars like this are endless and you are almost always better off buying something else if the goal is to rebuild it, repaint it, etc.....
In other words it's a parts car.

Always Bad Advice
Just a data point to add to this thread. I bought my 94 in December of 95 with 9,000 on the clock. It started out as a daily driver and life quickly overtook its practicality (kids!) and it became the weekend car. Well, 45,000 meticulously maintained miles later it now just goes out on club runs and once a year to the track.
Which brings me to my point. Once a year I take it to Buttonwillow Raceway and the University of VARA event. Over the last few years surrounded by D-Type Jaguars, 427 Cobras, and vintage Corvettes and Porsches, guess which car gets more than its fair share of attention? Among guys (and gals) who collect and race vintage cars the Third Gen RX-7 is very highly thought of and always draws a crowd on the first day of racing. Last year after I came off the track and parked, a 1965 Shelby Cobra GT350 pulled in next to me. The lady got out, took her helmet off, and hugged the top of my car and shouted, "I love this car!" I don't see any other cars from the 90s receiving that sort of adoration from people who love and collect vintage sports cars.
