Sell the FD and get a new miata :)

Mark my words, I will never be seen in a miata on the street. For guys who buy them as a budget rwd track car, I can kind of get it. I've always looked at Miatas as saying "i give up, I settled, everyone knows I don't want this but here I am". I am just not built that way. To each their own, I just couldn't do it personally.

I dig the new supras, but I also have always appreciated the MK4s as well. For the money, I am not sure there is a better sports car than the new supra or if it is even close. They take so well to mods, look good compared to most any other new car and for $45-60k it will destroy every porsche in that budget. I haven't driven one, but I imagine I will own one in the next couple of years.

I too would much prefer an MK4 Supra. But at the end of the day, it’s cool the new one exists and it only exist because the two companies worked together to make it happen.

I don’t view it as an age issue other than nostalgia for those of us that remember the overbuilt nature of the 90s cars. Companies teaming up is not something new, it even happened to 90’s JDL cars. It’s funny you bring up the eclipse suv example below. The eclipse was also known as the eagle talon and Plymouth laser. The Mitsubishi GT3000 was also a dodge stealth. Countless other cars share parts. I once had a Cadillac that was an Opel in most parts of the world.

again, no issue with disliking the new Supra, but I don’t understand those that dislike it solely for being built on the BMW platform.

im getting way off course here but BMW quality is basically on par with others these days. And Toyota is not the reliability king it once was so hard to say BMw drags down the brand. I had a V10 M5 from 2008, electronics were crap, a new warning light came on every time I went to drive it, but man it was an awesome car. All new cars are loaded with electronics, and most of those electronics come from the same major suppliers at this point. I doubt Toyota pays their suppliers more for higher quality on their boards than bmw does.

I get what you are saying. I still "like" the new Supra, I'm just disappointed with Toyota and wouldn't spend the money on one like I mentioned above, I would still rather spend money on a 30 year old car vs a brand new one in that context. I expect the American manufactures to do that like they did with the DSM's you mentioned above but it was sad to see large quality Japanese companies start to go that way. I grew up building American cars and engines from the 60's and up. So when I got into Japanese cars, it blew my mind the quality and precision that went into factory cars vs American. I used to work for Ford, Suzuki and was a Master Tech at Nissan for years. I don't know if I can think of a case in the 90's where a Japanese manufacture used an American car to resell, it may have happened and I just can't recall but for the most part it was American companies rebranding Japanese products. So to see Toyota do a 180 and do this with multiple cars like the Supra and FRS, I lost a lot of respect for them. I can at least say I am glad that Nissan hasn't completely gone that way. They stuck to their roots with their builds for the most part, even after they merged with Renault they didn't just rebrand a bunch of Renaults and slap a Nissan badge on them. Their Z's are still using Nissan platforms. Their GTR's are built at Nissan, not another manufacture like BMW then Nissan badges slapped on it.

Now that we are way off topic. I'll try to tie it back in with the topic. This is exactly why I think MKIV Supra's, FD RX7's Skylines etc. will continue to hold their value and only climb. I don't think the new Supra will ever hold value or even climb in Value like any of these cars have not just because production numbers but because of the lack of heritage and nostalgia. Half the people I see driving new Supras in my area are young rich kids just beating on them and old Ladies because its a sports car. I understand this happened with the cars in the 90's too but I don't see my old friends driving them because of the reasons I mentioned above. If you currently own an FD and you keep it in the same condition that it is in at the moment, it will most likely only climb in value from here on out. Market has softened for sure, but I don't think we will ever see pre-Covid prices.

They really do mod well and perform well. I wonder how they will stand the test of time. I haven't driven a Caymen but it is supposed to be in the realm of a GR Supra price wise. I don't know which model of Caymen and how it stands up to the Supra.

Caymans and Supras dominate our local AutoX.

But that could be related to the drivers.

Or their choice in cars.

We have a couple RX8 that do well as well.

Many in our group are mulling purchases of RX8.

For $3500, what have you got to lose?

And our local junkyards are still parting them out.

I'm guessing the Supra? How fitting for our recent discussions if so. I'm dying to get out and AutoX. You would think being in Tampa we would have lots of locations to AutoX but Covid wiped out everything local and the next closest location is over 2 hours away. There is a location being built only 30 minutes away that is claiming to be building a skid pad large enough to AutoX. We will see.

I'm not a fan of the look but I'm sure it's a nice car. Morgen had an m40i x3 and put 175k miles on it with little trouble, she currently has the m50i x5 and it's been great so far with 50k miles.

I can't speak for other BMWs but we've had good luck, especially considering they are turbo cars.

The Miata is just such a good sports car for the money. If I didn't have the FD I'd probably have one to run around town in. I'm still considering a GT4, but I can't make myself pay retail for a 2016 car, not to mention the prop tax, insurance cost, etc., for an impractical car that for the most part can only be fully enjoyed at the track.

What's your favorite car to drive these days?

mr2peak 04-15-24 12:24 PM

The MK5 is a BMW. They used an existing BMW chassis and engine and trans. Which means, if you're shopping for a Supra, you might as well cross-shop BMWs. You can get that same chassis/engine/trans package with 4/5 seats. The new BMWs are monsters. Top trim Supra is M2 money, and that's a vastly better car, closed deck block etc. Embrace it being a BMW, go look at BMWs

My 01 Suburban. Lol. It’s comfortable, everything works and it fits the whole family.

The McLaren is awesome and had been trouble free for 3500 miles so far(14k on it total). It’s a ton of car and I think I’ve said it before that it is way more car than I am driver. I actually typed this from the mclaren in the elementary school car rider line with AC blasting and it being 87 degrees out.

FD is still the most fun to push but I’m so confident in them.

I want a Gen 5 viper next I believe. It changed daily what I think I want or like. Lol. I never waiver on the FD though.

Picking up the baby in the Mclaren, love it :)

I hear you on the viper, they are special cars for sure.
