I'm a 34" waist and they RZ seats I sat in were damn snug on me......i remember thinking that if my ass was one inch wider there was no way I was fitting :D

That pretty much answers my question. Shitty because they look damn good.

I found this info interesting - because I've never seen a set with the cutouts.

However, yesterday I noticed something interesting - as we know, these seats aren't only used in FDs - they have also been used in miata (roadster) and FC specials - they have also been used by other manufacturers - including honda, in the NSX. Late model NSX (type-r) seats look like this...

perhaps it's these seats, on an FD rail?

DaiOni, I'm familiar w/ the NSX-R seats; I sell them too ;)

Ramy pm me if you're willing to let yours go or know where to get some others ;)

Andy, that's extremely unlikely, but I'll keep ya in mind if I have an impossible change of heart ;) I'm known to just hold onto rare stuff I prob won't ever use just cuz haha. Perks/curse of the business (depending on how you look at it).

RK, I'm a 36" myself, and I'm 6'1" w/o any problems.

I should elaborate a bit.....the owner of the RZ seats I sat in is 6 foot 2, 225, so he's a fairly big guy. Not sure what his waist was, however. He fits in the seats snugly, and says they're very supportive. In short, he loves them. He did say that the tilt function on the rails gave him more legroom. The reason why I found them kind of snug, is because I've been powerlifting with a friend from work, and have put on some bulk around the legs and azz, which wasn't really helping me when it came to fitting in these buckets.

I think alot depends on your entire frame, not just waist size. If you ever get the chance, definitely test them out :)

FDNewbie 04-08-07 01:02 AM

Rich I was 6" 225lbs not too long ago, and I fit in 'em no prob...and I ain't exactly a small dude ;) I've trimmed down to 205, and now they're just yummy :D

Yup...I'm 6' 2" 222-225lbs (depending on how much water I'm holding when Im on my cheat days!) My waist is 34-35". When I was bulking, I was a 36 and still was able to fit in them. I incorporate deadlifts and sprints into my back and leg workouts alot, so I carry alot of muscle weight in my thighs, hams and glutes. In that respect(as well as genetics), it will always be a snug fit for me. My car is not a daily driver and is used primarily for autox and car meets(I have 780lbF/730lbR springs, no A/C and have always been willing to sacrifice comfort for more performance). Although I did a 130 mile one-way trip in them before and they were just like the stock R1/R2 seats. The only exception was that my lower back hurt moreso than in the R seats because there is less lumbar support. But I have an injury in my lower back that hurts regardless of what car I'm in for a long duration. Just seems to hit faster in these seats.

If I remember what someone told me awhile back when I was looking to buy these is that the benefit of the kevlar is that it can bend when moving in them without cracking to a certain degree. Whereas carbon fiber will crack.

I think Mazda/Recaro did a wonderful job of engineering these seats to fit our cars and adding the tilt function as well. Like Rich said, they have to be sat in to truly be experienced and appreciated. I absolutely love them and dont regret one bit spending the money on them. I was brought up that quality doesnt come cheap and have always been into rare and odd stuff. They are AWESOME to look at and I get a lot of positive comments on them when I'm autocrossing. I should make note that I am in no way trying to solicit Ramy's business, nor did I purchase my set from him in the first place. I can imagine though that they are becoming increasingly rare and difficult to find as time passes.

crazyrx7 04-08-07 12:27 PM

Unfortunately no one around here has these seats for me to test out. It sure would be nice to get a little more head and leg room (I have a touring with the sunroof). BTW Ramy how much would seats (the reclinable ones) with rails cost shipped to Canada?

Why...is that a bad thing? lol

Absolutely. And depsite it being hard as it is to find 'em, it's even harder to find 'em in good condition. I dunno WHAT the Japs do to their seats, cuz most sets have essentially one bolster completely destroyed =-/

R.K.

Please don't misunderstand; NONE of the OEM Recars are reclinable. They DID, however, have as an available option a tilt feature in the rails. So the entire seat can tilt, but the seat back CANNOT recline. Wanna make sure you don't get the wrong impression. These ARE racing seats, not touring or sport seats, and hence are NOT reclinable. They're 1-piece seats.

As for shipping, I can ship Ground to Canada, so it would probably be the same price as listed on my site. If anything, it may be a few more dollars, but nothing significant (b/c I can do Ground to Canada).

Thanks,
~Ramy

I would definitely have to sit in one of those seats with the tilt feature before I commit $4000 to a pair of seats. BTW are the factory touring/R1 seats available as well? Are they cheaper to get a set of those from you or should I look locally?

Mi Casa es Su Casa ;)

Here's the simple answer. If you want MINT seats, the price is roughly the same; it's just that I can find 'em a lot easier (being that I have let model FDs to choose from, vs all the US ones which are at least 12 years old). Fair 'nuff? ;)

What I meant was I didnt want people to think I was trying to make it seem like they HAD to purchase them from you. If you recall, I posted a thread with pics months back when I just got the seats. Some jerkoff hijacked my thread and started BS'ing about how visible they were to thieves and that we were all trying to point out that only you were selling them. It turned into a 4 or 5 page brawl.

Doesn't Sparco sell some kind of lumbar support for racing seats that may help you out. I am very close to your description and work out as well (6'3", 224#). I also have lower back problems and I am looking to see if that lumbar support will work.

Yes, I believe your right, they do. Thanks for the recomendation. I just happened to use a small pillow for that long drive. There's a Sparco distributor not too far from where I live. Claims to be the east coasts largest distributor. www.midatlantictrading.com I've been meaning to go out there one day and check it out.

Don

wptrx7 04-09-07 01:12 PM

they are the largest dealer on the east coast, I've been meaning to go there as well (off a reccomendation from a friend). The only thing that I found weird when I calles was that they don't always have all the seats in stock, which is really weird. I also think the person I talked to was new or something, he didn't sound very confident..

Sobr609 04-09-07 03:49 PM

what's the average that people are paying for these seats for a set? dont get me wrong the spirit r's look sweet, but i wouldnt pay thousand's..i rather have the spirit r rims.. but i'd rather put that money in the motor, plus the stock fd seats are nice anyway, but i guess if you have the money..then whatever!

You most certainly can. I was initially going to do that w/ my black set ;) But keep in mind that there is no real NEED to modify 'em, as the side lap belts don't HAVE to go through the seats themselves. Moreover, the ONLY reason you need a center eye for the crotch belt is if you're running a 5-point belt, and IMHO, a 6-point belt is superior.

I'm going through emails as we speak. It's been raining replies the past cpl of days haha

We're breaking even, so I can't complain. Lots of start-up fees, N00B-associated mistakes that result in costly fees, learning to streamline shipping, handling, overhead, etc. So interest is booming, but lets just say we have our hands full w/ necessary improvements, not to mention building a comprehensive website database, trying to open up a full service shop, and finding the time to do it all using solely part-time staff haha. Whew :p:

Hahahaha  I remember that thread. Good times haha. Don't sweat it man. There are always some ppl looking to cause trouble in the mix.

Nice! I didn't know about those...thanks Luigi. I have a *horrible* back (weightlifting accident :()

~Ramy

wptrx7 04-10-07 08:59 AM

Currently I have the kidney ones on my Sparco Pro2K, but just like the two of you guys with weight lifting my lower back tends to hurt a little.

Carpe_Diem_7 12-10-15 03:02 AM

Trivia: interestingly, when I had two sets at the same time - spirit-r and early RZ - I had them side by side and there is a significant difference in height (the later ones seem to be about an inch taller).[/QUOTE]

Apologies for ressurecting an old thread. Can someone confirm that the old RZ seats (e.g. 1996 RZ) and the new Spirit R (2002) seats have actually the differences that Daioni and Ramy have mentioned (i.e. difference in height, bolt of harness, etc)?

My personal experience when I compared my RZ seats (same as 1994 Miata RS) with a friend's 2002 Spirit R is that the shell has the same shape and size. However, I could be wrong, as both pair of seats were mounted on the cars when we measured the shells.
