Different headlight lids on JDM FDs?

It seems that Mazda produced two types of headlight lids (perhaps to make the mounting points stronger).

While Mazda's EPC gives the part number FDY2-51-SH1 for the RH lid for all FDs (regardless year of production), it seems that some lids have the part number FD01-51-SH1 printed on them.

Anyone knows what is the actual difference between the two part numbers and why Mazda only provides the first part number in their EPC?

Interesting!

I Googled the FD01 number and it looks like it was coming up with a suffix of -NU meaning it was possibly painted and that's the paint code. May be one version is primer and the other is painted to match the car already.

Hi Dale,

^Perhaps that could be an explanation.
It seems though that the mounting points on older headlight lids were different than the newer, however I don't know when the change exactly happened. Supposedly the newer version has more support so that the tabs don't brake easily. Whether this has something to do with the different part number is still a mystery :)

generally the parts catalogs show the part that the car was born with, and if there has been a change in the part, or a supplier change, or even a Purchase Order to bring it into the parts side, the part number changes.

the JDM catalog shows the same FDY1 numbers though, so not sure where you're looking

I do need me some new headlight covers...It would be nice to know the "strengthened" the part...I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

Either or not

I don't have definitive confirmation of this, but from bumping back and forth between the JDM and USDM parts catalogue, I see a trend that "FD_ _ " is USDM, F _ _ _ is JDM and FDY2 is a part that is applicable to both JDM and USDM.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Mazda seems to do this. the first 4 numbers can be specific, FD01 is a LHD part number, FD03 seems to be for the R package cars, etc. F100 is the RHD base number. at some point the parts become the same, and then they just use an FDY1 number. the miata does the same thing. the US bumper was an NA01, the JDM N001, and then it just goes to an NAY1.

that being said, it doesn't apply to the headlight lids, the are FDY1 right from the start

There is no FDY1 part number, there is FDY2 and FD01.
So your jdm catalogue shows which of the two?
The FDY2 is found on the Mazda EPC, and it seems to be the same for all rx7s regardless the year of production.

Struting About

I was checking the numbers on a bunch of stock struts I have and none of them quite matched the part numbers in the USDM and JDM parts catalogues I have.

So what does that tell us? Weren't they supposed to match?

More

Just that its seems more variety of struts were used that the parts catalogues I have would indicate.

Are these lids or are these some sort of aftermarket headlights, the guy that had it on his YouTube doesn't know

I bet the shape is slightly different to accommodate that lighting, but it looks like there’s a vent on there too…ain’t stock! Could be even a one off piece based on the vented cover?

Redbul 01-09-24 12:54 PM

There was a "sleepy eye" look mod that somehow got the lids to only partially open. But if there is also a vent then likely one of the various after market parts that were common.

Prices for new OEM replacements vary greatly but you can likely find for about US$100 a side (unpainted).

Thanks for info 😇

This is just a vented headlight cover. Tough to tell exactly which one it is, based off this picture, but kinda looks like the FEED one (or knock off of it). There were several companies that had them, and many more companies that knocked them off. You can only get a vented cover for the passenger side, for obvious reasons, and the other will be OEM. The sleepy eye kits do not come with covers. They would retain the OEM cover (or aftermarket in this case), and modify the headlight mechanism itself. (note: depending on the kit, there may be modifications to the covers necessary. I had to modify my covers for the Knightsports kit for example, but it's still an OEM cover. Not a proprietary one.)

OK, it was more the led aspect part I was interested in and how to do that. So it's more of a mod to push up and add the led strip then?

Redbul 01-15-24 11:35 PM

We'd all like to know.

Yes, this car actually has standard popups, but he's got an LED strip along the lower front tip of the headlight lid. I'm guessing he's got a sleepy eye controller, so he he can pop them up just slightly to show just the LED strip. The owner is @blackbird_pl on IG
