Hey guys, haven't been active here since I sold my FD back in '14. wish I never sold it and have wanted to get into another one since. My buddy is a OTR truck driver and found a CYM R1 sitting in someones back yard. From the pictures he showed me it looks like its been sitting for a while. looks to need paint, the headlights are up, and probably needs a engine rebuild. Assuming it is complete stock, real CYM R1 has all the common FD problems, is in the 75k to 100k mileage range, What do you think would be a good offer? I know FDs are getting pretty pricey, but I don't want to spend a too much on a car that needs everything. It doesn't take much after a engine rebuild and a quality paint job and I'd be at good condition drivable car prices. I know its pretty a vague description of the car, just wondering of a fair ballpark offer I should make.

IMO its hard to buy one of these cars that needs all of the “consumables” replaced and a paint job. The chassis and parts have such a high value. Lets say you get it for $10k which from what ive seen is around about what shells are going for. CYM would probably have a premium but its hard to say since they dont really pop up. Between paint, engine, suspension and all the “while you’re in there” stuff you’re gonna rack up another $10-$15k pretty easily. That puts you around current values for a decent driver car. If you enjoy the process of building a car, and peace of mind that comes with knowing everything is “new”, then go for it. If you can get it for less than the number I threw out then go for it.

I may be off but hopefully others that are more in tune with the market will chime in.

Yeah that’s pretty much where I was at. I do enjoy the building aspect of cars. Guess I’ll just go hit him with my best offer.

I had a shell and was starting to get all the pieces together. It was kind of a long way to go as a shell goes. It would have been an easy 20k+ in parts to get it respectable.
I ended up selling the shell and buying a complete running car for well under 20k. My thoughts were that once I want to go in and do the work I can but still have a complete car.
If there is no way to buy a complete car outright cash in hand its a hard call. pieces will nickle and dime you to death.

the guy might not even want to part with it. it will probably be august before I can go check it out. according to my research the car hasn't moved in at least 5 years. I hate too see the poor thing rot away, but I'm with you, too much initial cost in something like that and I'd be better off finding a running one in the 20-25k range.
