Afraid I got Scammed

Okay, just purchased an FD on Ebay - buy it now. 1993 Montego Blue Mica Touring edition. Ad says only 15,000 miles, all stock, in really good shape. Anyone seen this before? Anyone taken for a ride on this? Opinions please.

kensin 01-25-17 07:47 PM

more info..

heynoman 01-25-17 07:59 PM

How did you pay for it? What kind of arrangement were made?

Fritz Flynn 01-25-17 08:03 PM

If it had a manual trans and you paid less than 20k you got scammed LOL

GoodfellaFD3S 01-25-17 08:04 PM

This is all we get? This thread is pointless without lots more details.

DC5Daniel 01-25-17 08:08 PM

Why on earth would you bid on something (especially a car), if you had any sort of doubt?...

Might be all stock and original, but with a blown engine.

I think you may have scammed yourself actually, when you clicked 'Buy It Now.'

Any updates?

FourtyOunce 01-27-17 08:18 AM

Perhaps a link to the Ebay ad may help? Someone here may recognize the seller's ID?

Update. Yes, got scammed. Feeling kinda like a dumba$$. I am working with ebay/paypal/bank to get my money back. If it sounds too good to be true....you know the rest.

Rguy 01-27-17 01:19 PM

How about some more details inclduing the ad and sellers name? What kind of feedback did the seller have?

Did you pay with a CC? If so no problem.

And BTW your thread sucks, how about some actual details?

Was it the one for $3000 or $6000 for 14k-15k miles? Something like that.

That listing doesn't exist anymore for anyone wondering about it. I tried to view it the other day and it gave me an error.

The seller was 'Iross93'. This was a legit account that was hacked/compromised and had good feedback. The listing itself was taken down by ebay right away, but I have a photo of the car that was used in the ad. Maybe someone recognizes it? I am lucky that I did not go outside of ebay/paypal channels, because I will be getting reimbursed.

Paypal is 110% buyer focused. You'll get your money back without even batting an eye lash.

I used to have an ebay business and payed $1000's/month in ebay fees and Paypal fees. All a buyer had to do to get a full refund was open a paypal claim, say "item not as described," and wait a week to get a full refund. No proof needed and no return of item needed. They get their money back and get to keep your item. Paypal takes the money out of your account the second that a claim is filed. I used to get scammed out of about $1000 a month by dirty buyers using this trick.

kensin 01-28-17 08:44 PM

how do you stop someone from doing you dirty then ? /\

That is not quite how PP claims work anymore.

The sellers account is placed on hold while an "investigation" takes place. That freezes money in your PayPal account, but they do not "take it", nor is it withdrawn from your bank account.

They draw this out over several weeks, requiring both parties to attempt to sort it out themselves.

When they inevitably side with the buyer, they require proof of return shipment and delivery before any money is returned. Although the buyer could ship a brick back, the seller does have the ability to reopen the claim and submit this as evidence for an overturn.

It's actually a pretty good system, now just a massive inconvenience when the seller wants to be an asshole and refuses to make it right immediately. The whole process can tie up money for nearly a month at maximum, IIRC.

Well, the last three posts were put in the "good to know" category and made the thread worthwhile. :)

WOW! you guys in the US have it good. I always knew that ebay/paypal in the US was better than in Canada but I had no idea that you guys were that far ahead of us. We're still on the old Ebay/Paypal scam system in Canada. It hasn't changed in years.

This is how it works in Canada:

Scenario #1:
Buyer buys item
Seller ships item
Buyer opens dispute
Paypal takes the money out of Seller's account and holds it
Buyer escalates dispute to a claim and says "item not as described"
Paypal makes seller provide proof that the item is as described
Seller uploads tracking info, pictures, link to listing
Paypal asks buyer if they are satisfied
Buyer says "no"
Paypal gives full refund to buyer including shipping
Buyer keeps item

Scenario #2: (similar to #1 but with tracking)
Buyer buys item
Seller ships item
Buyer opens dispute
Paypal takes the money out of Seller's account and holds it
Buyer escalates dispute to a claim and says "item not as described"
Paypal makes seller provide proof that the item is as described
Seller uploads tracking info, pictures, link to listing
Paypal tells buyer to ship back item and upload tracking number
Buyer sends empty package and uploads tracking number
Paypal refunds buyer full amount when the tracking number is uploaded (not when package arrives)
Seller gets empty package
Buyer keeps item

#1 used to happen to me all the time when I had a small ebay business (selling 500-1000 items per month). I was getting scammed out of about $1000/month like this. #2 happened to my friend last year and happened to me about three month ago.
