Is your intercooler to close to the battery?
My M2 med. intercooler fits snug against the stock battery. Unfortunatley, the battery started to leak acid onto the intercooler and started eating into it. Lucky for me the leak just started and the wounds to the intercooler are superficial. I am glad I decided to install a smaller R51 battery & tray today. Have you checked your battery lately?

Hey, I have a buddy that is producing battery trays to fit the 51R batteries. I have one and they are great! They are made of stainless steel and fit perfectly into the stock location. It uses the factory hold down rods, and comes with a new cross bar. You gain about 2 inches of IC room, and loose about 15 lbs of battery! PM me if anyone is interested. I think they are under $50. I Can get pics too.

Where can I get this R51 battery??
|
Yeah, what is a R51 battery and who makes it?
|
...and please post pics of the battery tray. Thanks.

R51 battery is the size of the battery, you can buy any type in that size, (I believe thats the stock size of an Integra or Civic). Here's a link to the battery tray:
http://www.wvinter.net/~flanham/wlanham/battery maybe someone can post the pics in this thread, i don't know how to write the script. eric |
I am using the Sears Diehard R51. I am using this battery because it has the most CCA I could find in a R51.

My battery doesn't touch my intercooler because I relocated it behind the drivers seat in the storage box. :) "If you have the means, I highly recommend it."

Hey, I wanted to start this thread up again. The battery tray pics in the link above
http://www.wvinter.net/~flanham/wlanham/battery are produced and sold by Jeff Hoskinson. I just talked to him and he sells them for $55 +$5 shipping in US. What a deal! He says he still has some in stock right now. You can email him at jeff.hoskinson@pscnet.com They are made of stainless steel and they fit into the stock battery location with a 51R battery. You can pick up a 51R battery at just about any auto parts store. This setup will give you AT LEAST an extra inch of intercooler room and less battery weight. Check out the pics! I just installed mine and it fits great! I highly recommend it. Jeff:cool: |
Does the battery have less power or something? any cons of the smaller battery??? i thought some people move the battery to the back? need info.

I guess I will have to do something about that.;) Rick |
To solve exactly what you are talking about, I shifted the battery from its stock location to the compartment behind the passenger seat. Not only does it solve your problem, but it also distributes the weight better. If it interests you, Pettit Racing has a relocation kit, or you can do it yourself, which is what I did. I took 4 gauge car stereo wire. Hooked it up to a voltage isolator on the battery 1 position. Then I hooked up the alternator to the isolator and ran the 4 gauge back to the battery. All of the accesories under the hood can simply be placed on the isolator on the same terminal as the 4 gauge. All in all it cost me about $60.

Oh yeah, the biggest reason that I did what I did, is becasue I was putting a deep cycle gel cell battery in the stock location, and I didn't want to mess with the weight distribution.

Can the 51R battery be used with the stock battery box???? My battery is dead and I have to get one today so you help would be appreciated!!!!!
Thanks, STEPHEN |
Yes, you can use a 51R in the stock box. I did for awhile. I finally went to a custom tray to secure the battery better during hard cornering at autocross events. Also, alot of people like the tray because it eliminates the plastic "box" and gives more room for intercooler and air flow. Don't learn this lesson the hard way like RICKRX7. His M2 intercooler wore a hole right through the side of his battery!
I am pretty sure that an aluminum radiator core wouldn't appreciate being covered with battery acid. Think about it. Just my $.02:) |

It doesnt matter for me though just as long as it doesnt slide around and the stock tie downs and everything hold it in place that all I care about. I dont have to worry about the M2 problem with my IC!!!!! When I designed it I made sure there was enought room, plus my IC uses brackets for mounting and doesnt move around. |
when moving the battery to the back cubby holes 95r2 ground zero where did you run the 4 awg wire throught the firewall? is there a difference in using 4 awg or 2/0 awg wire? and is there a kit that you used or did the 4 awg wire ended up costing you 60 bucks? what was the length of the 4awg?
thanx luigi, sorry for so many questions, i think i am going to relocate me battery to the back, just want to know how it was done. |
heat sheild for battery, etc...
Hi guys,
I'm the one who designed and had the tray built everyone is talking about. Here is why I designed it. M2 med IC ~10 lbs lighter than stock battery (sorry Jeff, it isn't 15lbs) Good battery capacity compared with gel cells Inexpensive and commonly available battery Fits under the hood because I have back seats. More room for air to exit radiator, 51R battery is 2" narrower than stock. The heat sheild issue cracks me up. Yeah a heat sheild will allow the battery to have a longer life, but if your running an aftermarket IC, like the M2 med then you DON'T have a heat sheild anyway. It is a good idea to put a battery mat between the tray and the battery to help lower heat conducting from the tray to the battery. The tray is made out of .062" stainless steel, it is much nicer than it needs to be. All the corners are welded and ground, it is much stronger than the stock tray and won't corrode/fail over time. It uses the stock tie down "j-bolts" and a custom crossbrace to fit the 51R batttery. The tray is produced by a production sheetmetal manufacturer, it is not a homemade piece. Compared to a gel cell the 51R battery has a much better reserve capacity and doesn't require constant charging. I've run my fans for well over 15min with the key on and the a/c button pushed and the car starts up just fine. Any other questions? I have about 25 of these in stock and I'm not making anymore for the FD after they are sold unless I get at least 15 pre-paid orders. About 45-50 people are running these trays now. Thanks for reading, Jeff |
