what's the most boost you can run safely on a stock rx7?

assuming i have a catback, dp, mp, and the power fc ecu, how much can i crank the boost and still preserve the life of the stock twins? also i just want to verify bone stock an fd should boost 10-8-10 right? thanks!

14.7

thanks for the reply..was i correct about the stock boost? also if i were to set the boost to 14psi with those mods above what trap speed and times can i expect (assuming i am a good racer)? is above 110mph and mid 12s possible or am i expecting wayy to much. thanks!

10-8-10 is correct and yes with good driving and good tires.

Ryan95 08-28-01 08:51 PM

3-4psi is about the most you can reliably run.

You go turning your boost up the 14.7 w/ out an upgraded intercooler and you'll be kissing you motor goodbye. The stock intercooler will heat soak very quick at that high of boost. Also your pushing your stock fuel system to its max at 14.7lbs. A more safe boost for you is 12.5lbs.

11.74 @116.5mph....

thanks for all the replies guys you are always very helpful. if i were to set the boost to 12.5psi like someone recommended what 1/4 mile times/speeds could i expect? i am planning on upgrading the intercooler and maybe getting a vented hood to help the heat escape so until i have that done i guess i'll wait before i push it above 13 psi. while i have you...i never hear much about top ends? what kind of top ends are possible..maybe 165+ mph? I wanna be able to beat my friends '00 ws6 on the highway. Thanks!

I went 12.1 @ 113mph running 12.5lbs of boost. As far as beating your friend, you'll have no problems. And when you upgrade your intercooler, I suggest getting a larger fuel pump and 1200cc secondaries. If you do this, you'll never have a problem with running lean. The stock fuel system is a major weak point in the RX7.

Ernie T pretty much covered everything for you. However, I wouldn't run no more than 12 psi with the stock ic. My car is setup right now to run 11.5 psi and I haven't had any problems so far. Dave from KD Rotary tuned my car and told me that running more than 12 psi with the stock ic is pushing it. Another great way to get more hp and tq out of your car is to tune your Power FC. Tuning the Power FC to your mods really makes a big difference. Also, you shouldn't have any problems spanking your friend in his '00 WS6.

A few great mods that you don't have yet is an intake, 180 degree thermostat and a fan mod. All these mods are inexpensive and will improve the performance and reliability of your RX-7.

1) The fan mod will allow you to run your fans up to 10 minutes after the car shuts down and will cost you $55 for this mod.
2) 180 degree thermostat keeps your engine running cooler and cost $115
3) Intake will improve the performance on your car and can be purchased around $150 for a used intake. This is a great way to buy an intake. All you have to do is clean or replace the foam piece of the intake and you pretty much have a brand new intake. To replace the foam filter with a new piece usually cost $20.

ErnieT : damn 113mph! Thats awesome for only 12.5 psi! Can't wait!

Reckless: If i were to take the car to the local rotary guy...could he do the mod for me and would he even know what i was talking about? I am not real familiar with working on an fd so i'd much rather pay someone a little more money to have it done right. Thanks!

Rmani...the best place for you to ever go to is KD Rotary. It's only 15 minutes from NJ. Try taking a trip out there to check out the shop. Also, try using the search feature on this forum and look up KD Rotary. Dave is definitely considered one of the best rotary specialist and you will be extremely happy with the work he puts into the RX-7. He also, has a dyno and tunes any type of RX-7 at his shop. Dave works on small projects to huge projects like installing a T-88.
