Is there any chance to read ecu codes without ECL?
 

Maybe you don't know but european FD DON'T have Engine Check Light, but in it's place a stupid rear fog light lamp
Is there any other way to read engine codes excluding the original Mazda code reader?

do you have the diagnostic port in the engine bay? i don't see how you can read the code if there is no CEL flashing to let you count out the code.

No problem. The US version was the only version to get the CEL.

Open the diagnostics port in the engine bay. Connect TEN and GND with a link. If you have a fast voltage meter, you can read the voltage on the CEL pin on the diags connector.

Alternatively, just buy an LED and a 680 Ohm resistor and solder them together. Put one end in the CEL pin socket, and the other in +BAT. Like so:

CEL <----- 680R------|< (LED) ------ +BAT

Shoot me a PM if you don't understand this. I have my FD at work today, and can duck out and check the pin names for you.

Pete i understand and i do have a diagnostic port in the engine bay
if you can post here a pic indicating the pins to use it would be usefull for all of us european owners

BTW i don't know if we have a CEL pin in the socket.

Lift the lid on the diagnostics connector. On the inside of the lid you will see a diagram of the PINS each with a name. Mazda have done a better job than I ever could :)

What rpm_pwr referred to as "CEL" is actually "MEN".

I dont' understand, even if you short the GND and TEN and read with a LED, how does this tell you what code it is? Does the LED flash at you?

aaah ok I will have to check on my car and get back to you. I think it is MEN. Whichever it is, you'll see it changing state with TEN and GND linked.

I tried the resistor/LED connection between the B+ and MEN terminals with the TEN terminal grounded on an AMERICAN RX-7 (mine). The LED did not flash while the check engine light was flashing. It did come on when I activated any of the E/L circuits were activated, so I think the LED was connected properly.

Perhaps the MEN terminal doesn't flash error codes in AMERICAN RX-7s ? (since we already have a check engine light) [and, yes, I did have an error code stored at the time]

I repeated this yesterday. The correct pin is FEN (top left). Note that LEDs are diodes so they only flow current in one direction. So if it doesnt come on at all, you've probably got the resistor-led link in around the wrong way.

Mine just flashed out all the usual missing emissions gears codes. :)

MEN,TEN,FEN you can see why everyone is confused :) Also, F/P is an open connector for the fuel pump. In diags mode (TEN->GND) you can run the pump to test the FPR and FPD. Also looks like you know what you're doing if there's people watching you work ;)

I confirmed this (as edited) today. With the TEN terminal grounded, the LED attached to the FEN terminal displays the ECU error codes just like the check engine light.

Also works on the JC Cosmo (both 13b and 20b versions). They dont have a CE light either. Beats me what the codes mean though :(

It wasn't sceptical, but I do prefer certainty.
If I had passed the information to someone else without confirming it, I would have said something like "I haven't tried this, but I've been told ...". Now I can say with certainty "You can connect an LED and ..."

Hi guys,

Being in the UK it seems anything is a PITA to get hold of, would one of you be good enough to have a look here (http://rswww.com) and get me the part numbers for the 680R and LED? Simply typing 680R comes back with about 1000x different results.

I'm ok at following circuit diagrams etc but when it comes to choosing the bits I'm clueless.

i used a test meter (the one with the swinging needle, not a digital one ) this works fine
