Strong Coolant Smell At Top End

STRONG COOLANT SMELL AT TOP END, CAN ANY ONE HELP ME ON THIS ONE, I HAVE A VERY STRONG COOLANT SMELL WHEN IM AT TOP END SPEED. I ONLY SMELL IT WHEN I PUNCH IT, I WAS WONDERING IF IT WOULD BE THAT MY OVERFILL TANK HAS TOO MUCH COOLANT IN IT, AND IF IM THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS THIS SMALL PROBLEM, I HAVE CHANGED OUT MY UPPER AND LOWER COOLANT HOSES. I HAVE CHECKED THE HOSE COMMING FROM THE AST TO THE OVERFLOW TANK THAT WAS OK. I DONT SEEM TO BE LOSSING COOLANT AND MY LOW COOLANT LIGHT HAS NOT COME ON. ( IM LOST TOO ) LOL

I wish i could help you man. The best I can say is the rad hoses.... but you replaced those. Maybe it is just a little coolant that has dripped out from the change. Just be careful, I didn't relize my upper rad hose split untill almost the last minute.

I have the same problem. Turns out to be the coolant hoses to the turbos. THese are usually the first hoses to go because of extreme heat, and not everyone knows that the turbos are watercooled.

Dude, take care of this prob. immediately! This definitely sounds like your upper coolant hose to the turbo. It is about 3 inches in length and is HIGHLY prone to go out on you. I've gone through 2 in 3 yrs already. The last one just busted while the car was sittiing in my driveway overnight. I was lucky, bec. just minutes before I was racing around the city hitting about 3 WOT runs. If it would've gone out on me then...I would've been F#@#. Another possible hose that may be leaking is a small 2 inch hose that is located under your Y-pipe. This one also has gone out on me. The reason you are smelling the coolant is that it is leaking onto your engine and burning off which is giving you that coolant smell. If it were coming from your overflow tank....you prolly wouldn't even smell it because it would just evaporate and dry up on its own.

thanks

i was right about to start a new thread, but this may be my problem. if i really get on it, my coolant appears to vanish. usually overnight, i start it in the morning and the lights on and its buzzing at me, sure enough i check, its low. i never see any of the dreaded white smoke. i pulled over before and checked(visually) my exaust many times. and i do sometimes smell coolant while driving. i will certainly take a look at this

OK, one last possible hose. This one also leaked on me and for a few weeks I smelled coolant as well. It is the hose that goes into your throttle body and travels down into your engine. Just follow the hose from the throttle body all the way down. It goes into the engine straight up and down. This hose is a bitch to change and will also cause you to smell coolant without actually seeing a wet spot or puddle underneath your car. ;)

Damn badass, you like to go through hoses don't you? :)

Did you reuse the crappy spring clamps when changing the raditor hoses? Use a worn style clamp.

Search the Forum for "coolant problems", lots of info. If you can't find a leak then rent a coolant system pressure tester from AutoZone, Pep Boys, etc. and do a test when cold. It may take a while but if there's a leak you'll find it, if pressure drops and no leak - pull your spark plugs and check for coolant on them. GOOD LUCK!

WHOOO HOO THANKS

THANKS FOR THAT INFO I WILL GET STARTED ON THAT COO,ANT TEST IN THE AM. WOULD I HAVE TO LET THE CAR SIT ALL DAY OR SHOULD IT BE DONE AT NIGHT

Sorry Trout, but this is REALLY bad advice.

Worm style clamps cannot expand and contract with heating and cooling, and after a few hundred cycles will "chew" the hose and cause it to leak. Everyone always overtightens them also. The stock clamps can be a little challenging at times (especially the big ones) but there is a method to Kansei engineering....it takes very little clamping pressure to seal a hose to a nipple, and they will last indefinitely if they are not sprung.

Trout 10-31-01 02:26 PM

RonKMiller - I see your point about expansion. I seems like the Mazda clamps lose their strength and can't be reused 100% of the time. Myself and other have reused them and often find poor sealing after reusing - this is on both 1st and 3rd gens. I've replaced with worm style clamps in the past and never had a problem with the hose being eaten up - maybe because I don't over tighten them, which is very commonly done.

Does someone make an decent aftermarket spring style replacement clamp that lasts? Even if it only lasts as long as Mazda's clamps, aftermarket would probably be more reasonably priced.

My car did exactly this two weeks ago before it ruptured its upper turbo coolant hose. No visible coolant loss, no puddles, just a faint smell at high rpm. Then WHAMO! Thick smoke and ALL the coolant on the ground.

were o were is the upper coolant turbo hose

please ive tired and tried to look for it, i took out the stock intake and the plastic y pipe, i went to mazda and got the turbo loolant hoses but i think that they gave me the wrong one, if you have the part number please let me know i will try to do this my self if i can thanks please help lol
