Some internet testing of major intake suppliers
|
Cool. This is a very interesting read. I can certainly agree with HKS filter being the worse. I have used their Powerflow and Super Powerflow. They both such in alot of dirt. How did they come up with power gain? Is it from a dyno run or flowbench?

very interesting. It manages to filter out the most, AND give the biggest hp gains. are the filters bigger?

Ya know, the engineers at Mazdza were pretty smart about some things, and even though there is no question the stock intake system is restrictive, it does allow for a very large surface area.
(and keep intake and airpump noise down) I opted for a K&N drop-in filter to replace the stock, and opened up the airbox with my own cool air intake hoses from below the car. Total cost? About $50.00. Does it look cool? Hell no. But I'll bet it flows and filters as good or better as any of the other intakes that cost literally 10 times as much, and I never have any issues with the emissions Nazis. I just can't believe any of these "tests" unless they are done by UL or another impartial professional lab. It's pure unscientific bullshit and marketing poppycock probably underwritten by Apexi with a wink, nod and some cash. Call me skeptical - it happens all the time! (That's exactly what Motor Trend does every year with their Car of the Year Award) |
1993 Import Car of the Year!!!
Hey, I resemble that remark. Motor Trend Import Car of the Year for 1993 was the Mazda RX-7:D I got the sticker:D

Are there any sites for major testing on exhaust??? sorry of being off topic but i just wanted to know.:D
|
yes it is very unscientific,
anyone whose ever done research in a lab knows: multilple trials are necessary to prove anything significant, if there were, than they should post them up there are always random errors and artifacts in any experiment to make us feel good/bad about the set up we have, or to help others choose the best intake, the similiar tests need to be conducted by different set of individuals/companies who do not have ties to the product itself the HP differences are not significant if there is +1/- 1 error on the dyno, and i don't think dynos have a 100% accuracy other than that, it looks like HKS sucks ass and i'm very disappointed at K&N's performance |

I agree with RonKMiller on the stock intake filter area. I did a similar thing as him. I cut a slot in the bottom of the air box and fabbed a duct out of .015" aluminum sheet. I bonded the duct to the bottom of the air box and routed the duct between the radiator and frame. I also kept the stock ducting. No test data here, but I like the fact that it looks stock, has a good filter (K&N with a homemade support frame), and CAN'T ingest any underhood air!
