non-sequential question
I'm doing the conversion without removing the turbos and manifold, I'm putting a small weld to hold open the turbo control arm after removing the actuator, and a small weld to hold closed the turbo precontrol arm after removing the actuator, but which way is open or closed on these, which of the arms should be aimed towards the front or the rear of the car?
I'm taking pictures as I go so I can do a how-to page because I haven't seen one, so far this has been an extremely easy mod to do since I didn't have to remove the turbos, if I'm really happy with the effect I might take the turbos out and port the wastegate and do the rest of the job the "proper" way. |
The turbo control actuator has to be moved towards the front and the precontrol towards the rear.

Sweet, thanks Mike! So just to verify, the control arm when the valve is OPEN is pulled INTO the control actuator (towards the front of the car), and the precontol arm when the valve is CLOSED is pushed AWAY from the precontrol actuator (towards the rear of the car)?

Ok, so lets say you are looking at the rods from the bottom of the FD. Lets first look at the turbo control. Moving it counter clockwise will open the flap alowing exhaust to flow behind it and into the turbo. As you can see from the pic, moving the precontrol flap clockwise will open it up. Should the pre-control gate be open or closed? Dave at KDR told me the arm should be welded in the closed position, but the write-up at http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/non-sequential.html has it welded in the 90% open position |

I don't know your reasoning for going non, but I went non-sequential when KDR put my new ported motor in. I do a lot of drag racing and can say I am not happy at all with it. It is too laggy. Like a single turbo, but not a single turbo power. Most people like it for its simplicity because you get rid of your rats nest and selanoids as well as no transistion spike, but if I had to do it again I'd stay sequential. Now I just have to save for a single turbo. Don't get me wrong I still love it, but its just not the same seat of your pants feel.

I've heard you should keep them ALL open.
I also know someone that is going from non-seq BACK to seq. He says the lag SUCKS, and he's pulled high 11s with the sequentials running only about 15psi, and there are STILL a few things he can do to improve airflow. What is the moral of the story? The sequential system is good for 11s and possibly 10s :D |
past 4500 isnt the lag gonna be the sme? the only lag ur gonna get is below full boost.(seq dont have much lag at all).I get full boost at 3900 -4k..it dosent bother me...if im racing im usally stayin above 5k so lag is all the same....its all what ur lokin for....im prob goin single over the winter anyway...

I know about the lag in lower rpm's but it won't be any slower than a sequential car at all - when you're racing you shift near redline which will bring you to 4-5k in the next gear. If I want to take off on the street I'll just go down a gear or two like I do already with the sequential.
It's not a one-way trip, if I don't like it I can grind the little tack weld off holding open the control and precontrol arm with a dremel and do the silicone hose replacement like I started out doing but got side-tracked... |
