How do i know if i have an R1 ?

Hi guys ,as an Englishman fairly new to the Rotary phenomena, please indulge me with my question.Having just read an article on the Generation 3,(i have an early car registered in Japan in May 1992)can you tell me if it is an R1 model? It has a front strut brace with an Rx7 badge on it and incredibly firm suspension !Chassis number is Fd3S-107922 and it does not have a sunroof.Anyone know?oh and its manual Transmission.

Look and see if it has dual oil coolers. You should be able to see into the front ducts and see them. If it does you have an R1.

also no cruise control, no rear wiper, suede seats.

The extra oil cooler is probably the best way to check though.

Hey i have an R1,Thanx Guys

:D Hey Guys thanks for the response to my question.Looks like i have an R1.It has the twin oil coolers, suede upholstery etc.Mine also has rear seats and rear wash/wipe which may be because it was originally for the Japanese home market.I am really pleased with the car having had BMW M3 evos and 911 Porsches in the past it is way more fun than either of those, its just the fuel consumption(we pay nearly 7 dollars a gallon!),but hey you cant have it all!

Unless it's an automatic....which everyone assumes it isn't (so do i, just playing advocate). The Auto tranny cooler is in the same place as the second oil cooler. I don't know what they do when you have an R1 Auto, though.....

Yes my car is a Manual so i am pretty happy that its an R1.Do all RX7 Gen3 have a front strut brace that looks pretty much Factory fit?I was thinking of fitting a HKS induction kit but have been told all it does is draw in hot air fom under the bonnet(sorry,Hood!)Anyone had any experience of this kit?

Oh - you already have us figured out huh? "Yall"
I live in Vail from June to October so I know your old stomping grounds pretty well........
As far as I know (which isn't much) only the R1's came equipped with the factory strut brace, but it could be purchased as an accessory. My opinion is that most of the induction kits are way overpriced and work marginally, but there's tons of threads here on the subject if you hit the search button...... I'm sure the rest of the guys would be willing to give you their "two cents" worth. Cheers.

What you have is definately NOT an R1 model. The R1/R2 models were US-trims while you have a Japan-market RX-7. Check around the door Jam for a 3-digit code that'll tell you which version you have. Since its a manual, the first 2 letters would be "JA" and the last letter is either A, D, or E. For example, JAD would be a "Type X" model.

By the way.....just out of curiosity..are your rear seats of the same phony suede material as the fronts, or are they black leather (or vinyl)?

none of the japanese cars have the sunroof, and they all have the rear wiper.

So now i am really confused. My car has dual oil coolers,Bilstien dampers,Factory strut brace, suede seats, deep lip front spoiler, rear wing, everything that makes it R1 spec, yet its not!.It does nt have any code inside the door jam other than telling you how much air to put in the tyres!.To the other enquiries the rear seats are sort of fake leather/vinyl with about the same leg room as a 911,ie none.you can get two kids in the back without too much whining, but adults in the back and i am driving with my nose on the steering wheel, though its not too bad on front passenger side. The other question about sunroofs,i looked at about a dozen Gen3s all from Japan and most had sunroofs.Iprefer the shape of the roof without one and hey its never sunny in England anyway, and it has aircon.
Have a nice day everyone Rotarybrit
