is this a good deal on a FD?

The guy is in my city, and here is the response i have gotten.

"This car is a manual 5 speed with a twin turbo engine. It had about 50K miles on it when we had to replace the speedometer and since then it has had about 17K more miles on it (this is what is showing on the present speedometer). We had the turbo oil pump replace last November along with all of the vacuum hoses while the were working on it. I will attach some pictures to this email. Our RX-7 is a hard to find R-1 model and is red, with a black suede/velour interior. The exterior is in good shape, with no rust. The interior has no tears or cracks of the dash, etc. The engine is a twin turbo rotary engine that we had the turbo oil pump and vacuum hoses replaced in November, 2000. They did a tune up on the engine at this time also. The car is pretty standard, with no after market add on's added since we bought it. The primary fuel injectors (one is sticking open according to Mazda mechanic). The fuel injectors would cost me $1200 for parts, labor, etc. and I do not want to put any more money than I already have into this car. I have 2 kids in college and just can not afford it. I talked it over with my son and we decided to knock the cost of the primary fuel injectors off of his asking price if someone is interested in taking the car as it is. A person with mechanical experience or with a competent mechanic working on it might get by for less or be able to repair/clean the injectors. Bottom line is, we will let the car go for $10,500 to the 1st person that wants it."

It seems nice, but needs some primary fuel injectors? Would those really cost $1200?

Here are some pictures of the car:

What do you guys think?

it looks good.. get a carfax and then you should be able to find some used injectors or take those out and send them to RC for cleaning and blueprinting... I odubt it would cost $400 if you did it yoruself!

gsxr1000 08-08-01 01:49 PM

definitely get a compression check on the engine...the motor is likely not doing too well if it still has the stock pre-cat on there...that thing is murder on these cars

decide exactly what you want
decide exactly how much you want to spend
then take some time to wait until you find it (and be prepared to travel)

personally, i would only buy one from people like those on this board - owners who know the car - not ones who say, well, the mazda mechanic told me , "blah blah blah".

my 2 cents

the primary injectors will cost 1200 parts and labor, you can do it youself and save some of that. the injectors might be leaking fuel externally too. that car has been hit in the front right corner. the right fender has been replaced. its a p.o.s. but 10.5 is not a bad deal...

man, i dont get how you FD guys can tell
so easily if a cars been hit just by lookin at it!!

Ivan(mechanic guy in the bay area) looked over my car
a bit ago... and he's like .. "thats been replaced, that hasnt,
that as" etc etc,

i'm like "whaaa?!"

anyways,
CARFAX ALWAYS,
if that guy didnt tell you it was in an accident by now,
he probably wasn't going to. I wouldnt pay 10k for
a car thats been in an accident, AND requires fix up work.

That's a good price, even if it needs some work. The only thing that is funny is that the speedo was replaced... that seems a little odd.

I just sold my red/black R1, and was suprised at how many people wanted it. I basically sold it in 3 days for more then this one, with an eninge with 17k miles on it and over 100k on the body... theses cars are in demand.

I would expect to pay around 17k (high book) for a MINT 93 R1 in Red/black, one that had perfect paint, perfect interior, garage kept, low miles or new engine. So at 10.5 you still got some money left to make it perfect.

Thats what he tells you about the speedo. That may be a smoke screen on why the title says the milage is not the actual miles on the car. If it states this on the title the car will not be valued at book value. Dealers wont give you dirt for the car.

if you look at the hood its not sitting right, that is what hints at the damage i assume. had to go back and look after someone pointed it out. do a carfax and see what it turns up. personally i think you can find better.

I saw an ad the other day (now gone) for a 1993 R1 with a bad engine for $8500 or best offer. Body looked pretty good and It had less than 70,000 miles (I think).

How much would it cost for a new engine?

zyounker 08-09-01 12:46 PM

If you have someone else put in a new engine your looking at 5-6K & it will probably not boost right after you do this.. If i where going to buy a new RX-7. Would buy one with a blown engine in good condition. Then buy an new engine & single turbo... And run a Power FC or Haltech.. If you stick to stock boost levels the car will probably last longer that it would if it where stock. You never know how a rotary has been treated.. That cars engine is probably shot. I would maybe pay $8-10K if the body was in great condition..

not only is the hood not sitting right, but it looks like the emblems on the back have been rearranged a little, which could indicate a repaint.

give us the VIN and we'll run a carfax on it.

Yeah..It looks like the hood is off center.Sure sign of possible accident damage.Check history!!!!!
