Anyone else not drive their car in the rain?

It rained last night and today :( I hope it clears up soon so I can go drive.

3rdgenowner 07-29-01 02:48 PM

Hey man, I feel your pain. I live in VA and its rainin right now. But with this second boost problem I dont want to drive it anyway. Its pissin me off. Where r ya from anyway?

7-sins 07-29-01 02:51 PM

Manassas, like five minutes away from PFS.

Whats your 2nd turbo doing? Mine isnt spooling up at all

3rdgenowner 07-29-01 03:24 PM

I live in front royal but I work in Fairfax, Ive taken mine to Peter Ferrell, but for trans work. My first turbo is ok but when it makes the transition to the second it drops boost, and then to only five pounds. This sucks.

ejmack1 07-29-01 03:46 PM

Hey i have the same boost problem, i am suspecting the CRV, but i am going to have to drive the thing in the snow, pretty soon, thats goona suck, i think ill be walking

3rdgenowner 07-29-01 03:51 PM

If you suspect the CRV, cap it off with something and if it boosts up, then that is your problem, if not then its something deeper. Ive already tried that. Didnt help me one bit.

Rix7 07-29-01 05:32 PM

I'm always wary about driving in the rain. Can't go fast and I always have to think about traction. Reminds me of driving in the rain after I first bought her. Not very fun! :fruit:

EugeneChoe 07-29-01 05:43 PM

dude why do we all have this second turbo thing. i get 8-5-5 for my car. its friggin weird. and whats that about the crv do i cap it before the crv or after the crv or on the crv pipe. also do you think it has anything to do with me taking off the bov pipe from the airbox and capping the airbox. who else with this problem has the bov whoosh thing done. man we need to figure this out. haha

ejmack1 07-29-01 06:08 PM

If you get full boost on your primary you know its not going to have anything to do with your BOV....

alexm 07-29-01 06:30 PM

I refuse to NOT drive my car in the rain.

Yes, the RX-7 is light, and yes, it's RWD. That doesn't mean it's awful in the rain. Basically, as long as you aren't gassing it around corners, it should handle just as well as any other car. If you have good tires (I have AVS Intermediates) and aren't crazy wide (I'm sticking to 225s) and know how to avoid standing water at crazy high speeds (80+ mph) you're fine.

Really, rain doesn't mean ICE. You don't even have to drive that conservatively - just don't power on through corners.

Alex.

Rix7 07-29-01 06:37 PM

It's just not as fun, and having an FD is all about having fun driving it, right?

RonKMiller 07-29-01 06:40 PM

I hate driving my 7 in the rain. That means I have to wash it.
It't good to be obessive compulsive if you love your 7.
It will love you back
:cuddle:

rxrotary2_7 07-29-01 08:04 PM

although i must agree that the car is fun as hell to drive in the rain. my current fd has never seen rain. that is what i have my other cars for. the most fun is driving my mothers q45. that thing is a beast in the rain. it sucks. but thats what makes it fun. my old vw was fun to drive in the snow!

3rdgenowner 07-29-01 09:36 PM

Now that I think about it, capping off the CRV wont do a thing. If you cap off the ABV, then you can check it. If you still have the problem, then its something else. I put an APEXi BOV on mine and it didnt effect it any. I capped it off once and kept blowin off charge pipes, DOH!! Well if anyone has the answer to this 2nd turbo problem, PLEASE let the world in on this secret..

Donovan 07-29-01 11:50 PM

I hate to drive it in the rain. The first day I had it it POURED like hell for the 2 hour drive home and the the next week. Since then I've never taken it out in the rain unless I get caught by suprise. I like to keep it clean and it takes about two days of under car with a towl and crap in my eyes to get it back.

7-sins 07-29-01 11:59 PM

3rdgenowner, I work in Fairfax as well... Right where Rt. 50 and 66 connect, a little past Fair Oaks mall.

Yeah a lot of people seem to have the boost problem. Mine is 10-11 psi on the first turbo then after 5k its at 0. If I bring it up to around 5k then in 2nd gear at WOT I only get 5psi. I am planning to get a silicon vacuum hose job done this weekend. I am running about 16 inHg vacuum at idle though. If I tap the gas a little in neutral the RPMs will drop and give a rough idle for a second. It might be one of the valves because under light throttle the valves make some weird ass noises.

3rdgenowner 08-02-01 10:29 PM

Ive got an apointment with PFS on Monday the 13th to get this problem licked. I hope it takes care of it. By the way, I work at Fairfax Honda. You might have heard of it??? Well you being at 50 and 66 then YES you have. Well anyway, I read that the double throttle can cause boost problems but Im not sure on that one. I've been going out of my mind for the past 3 weeks. I have not been able to figure it out yet. Everything I check out seems to work the way it is supposed to. It sux. I wish someone here had a new idea or something else they could suggest I check to give me some more motivation. Im almost ready to SELL!!!!......well not quite, but Im pretty pissed off.

f2racer 08-02-01 11:42 PM

What a bunch of "gurly boyz" we got here. Drive in the rain all the time... Makes the car easier and more predictable to drift ;)

7-sins 08-03-01 12:42 AM

3rdgenowner,

Yeah ive hurd of fairfax honda, thats where I went when I was trying to find a prelude (before I wanted an FD). Do you ever drive your FD up there, I might have to stop by one day to say whats up.

Chris

martini 08-03-01 12:58 AM

yeah, it's fun, because my tires are pretty low on tread. it slides pretty easily. That doesn't make it dangerous though.

If I didn't drive my car when it rains, I would get to drive my car at all..I live in Washington.

adamrx7 08-03-01 06:46 PM

I to have a boost problem. How about we rally and get a "Boost Problem Specific Area" I think it would help. My radiator is sitting on my deck at the house or I'd be working on my holy grail.

3rdgenowner 08-03-01 07:13 PM

Yeah I drive it up there sometimes. Most of the time I leave it at home though. Too many miles to put on it. I need to fix my boost issue first. I talked to Peter Ferrell today and he said that its probably a boost leak, DUH. Like I needed him to tell me that. Well I think Im gonna get the keypad while im there. My friend has one and he said you can turn up the boost a bit while using it. We'll see how it goes. Yeah man stop in if you see the rex parked out front and ask for the guy who owns it in the service department. I'll be glad to chat with ya. One thing about my car though is that the guy who had it before me took terrible care of it, so the paint is a little iffy, and it needs a good cleaning in the engine bay and interior, and new leather seats. Other then that I LOVE the car.

Eci Elite 94 Rx-7 08-03-01 11:00 PM

I don't take my car out unless its dry, 70 degrees, no humidity with a clear sky. I never drive mine. I miss it though.

ANDREW GIANINO 08-04-01 08:47 AM

Why not

Hey I recently picked up a 94 touring type, and after a few close calls in the rain I decided to find a good empty lot near bye and waited for a good rainy day .Learned alot on how this car respondes in the rain. I did this with my last car and it did a world of good to build my cofidence in the rain. The car is stable in the rain but the throttle response encourages you to drive this with a little more driver imput that I have had in other cars .But bottom line dont fear the rain , learn how to drive in it and have some fun four wheel slides.... I also live in northern Virgina,Louden county.

White 94 touring ,99 spec rear wing, PFS intercooler,PFS exaust, PFS cool air intake, and the cat has also been replaced.More motor goodies after I complete my suspension and brake upgrades.

annarborman76 08-04-01 01:12 PM

I always try to avoid the rain with my FD. I recently went to a race track though which was scheduled weeks in advance and it rained half the day. I took it out on the wet track and it didn't take much for me to completely spin my car. That was my first time at the track so I'm no expert but at least I wasn't alone. A Viper and an NSX spun too. So watch those hard corners in the rain. I think ANDREW GIANINO idea of test rain limits is a good one.
