94 rx7 with stock motor

couldn't find the right forum for this, so I hope you don't mind if I put it here....

I've found a 94 rx-7 with 71k miles on the stock motor. The only things that have been done to the car is 2 warranty replacements (fuel and cooling).

The guy is asking $13k for the car (he's the original owner - wants something bigger).

Is it a mistake to buy an RX7 with the original motor at 71k miles??? Even if he took prety good care of it, would this engine last much longer?

Thanks for any advice.

Well for a 94 that is a nice price... I would make sure that the the car is in tip top body/interior/trans. The motor and turbos your probably going to want to replace later down the line, and when you do your probably going to want to have the motor ported and upgrade the turbos... M2 400HP maybe... Just realizes that the car you are buying has a track record of not lasting past 100k miles. I am not saying that it is going to blow on you as soon as you get it but you need to plan on it as if it were going to....

With a stock motor, probably the best thing to look for is the maintenance records. Did it get regular oil, coolant, and fuel filter changes? Does he have the receipts to prove it? If the answers to those questions are "yes", than I'd feel confident the engine
could go 100k miles or more.

If he doesn't have the records, it doesn't mean something bad is going to happen soon, it just means you have to keep it in mind.

If you buy the car change the oil, coolant, spark plugs, air filter, and especially the fuel filter right away. Then I'd rest easy and enjoy the car.

I have a 94 with 76k miles and there is no way I'd let mine go for that cheap. That is below observed market value by $2000 at least. I would be very cautious....

Definitely pay the money to have the compression checked. If it is below 7 I would stay away from it unless you are willing to replace the engine soon.

Well, I bought my 94 (100% stock) in January. It had 70k miles on it and the stock pre-cat. Today I have a new engine and turbo's w/ 71k on it..If the thing still has the pre-cat installed, start planning who you want to build you an engine and what turbo set up to go with, that's IF you plan on buying it. Otherwise look for one that has a fresh motor and turbo's.. or buy this one and build it YOUR way. it's inevitable either way..

94 stock 70k w/ precat= $ out of pocket later
94 fresh engine & turbo's= $ out of pocket now

:D

I'll second everyone else's advice. Definitely get the car checked out by a RX7 specialist and buy only if all maint records are there. You'll probably need to spend some money in reliability upgrades such as down pipe and silicon vac hose ($500 each).

The price is pretty low so check car fax as well. Be a little on the careful side. Buy it only if you know all the details on it.

71K is normal mileage on a 94'. If all maint are done religiously and the owner has taken good care of it, 100k mi should be obtainable.
