'93 rx-7 cuts off at stops
 

Alright i have a 1993 touring package rx-7. Recently i had the front seal replaced b.c. of a pretty major oil leak and i had it tuned up. Well now at stop lights it will just cut off when i stop .... you can see the idle just slowly die. It's apparently got another oil leak ... you can smell it after running for a while and it's apparent on the ground. Please let me know what you think the problem is and what the solution would be.

check the pressure sensor
 

if it is dying at idle, it might be something as simple as the pressure sensor coming off. it's a little black vacuum hose attached to a black box labled "pressure sensor" this is located inside the engine bay near the firewall on the driver's side. i think i have a picture...

if u look at mine, i'm using a stupid little wire to keep it on till i find a clamp. ha! i'm just to lazy to go looking around for a clamp.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem... I've also noticed that my vacuum levels are a little low... (like 10 in Hg... Ok, so they're way low). However, I noticed I had an awful lot of play in my throttle cable too. Could this have anything to do with the stalling at idle? I had the compression levels checked and they are fine. For that matter, my boost levels are too, just doesn't seem to draw enough vacuum at idle.

One question for you, do you have the same problem with your A/C off, but the vent fan on 3 or 4? Mine gets close to stalling but will keep running if the A/C isn't on.

Any additional help on this would be greatly appreciated!

oh my only problem was the disconnected vacuum line to the boost sensor... once i hooked it back on, my problems went away. i don't have problems with the ac.

Idle speed control solenoid?

Does this happen while the car is still cold?
What is your idle when it is warm and in Neutral?

There are several areas that can go wrong with the idle, but all but a few have the ability to be adjusted.
Adjusters:
Air Adjustment Screw (AAS)
Throttle linkage position screw
Fast Idle Screw

If there is a heat related issue I would start looking at the Fast Ilde unit located on the backside of the throttle body. There is a piston that is moved up or down by a thermal wax that is conductively heated by the engines coolant. There is the possibility that this piston is malfunctioning, but more likely it is the adjuster screw which has been backed off or over adjusted by who knows what. Adjusting it is simple, and the results are generally quick.

The AAS is located under the intake elbow of the throttle body on the throttle body in a recessed hole. Turn it to adjust the idle, but if you can't reach the desired idle within the range of the screw, then forget it, and set it back to where you started.

The throttle adjustment screw should be left alone at all cost. It plays with the Throttle Position Sensor, and that is something you want to stay away from if you can.


As for the boost sensor popping off, or not plugged in, the result of it is drastic and very dramatic. Just unplug it for a second and you will see what I mean, but I doubt that it is your problem.
