your help and opinion needed
 

Okay here is my problem and I need your help: When driving under harder conditions (above 5k) I cant shift into 3rd hard (like racing even with the clutch to the ground) I have to let the car drop revs a bit before it will go in, or I will GRIND!! the 1-2 is okay but 3rd is the bitch. Under NORMAL conditions tho the 2-3 is fine. Now I know it's not my bushings cause I already replaced them when I got my short shifter. It's also not my pilot or release bearing cause those are also new as well as new clutch. Reverse is also a bitch now, so I'm thinking syncro?? please tell me its not!!!

Now for the opinion:
If it is the syncros I'm not going to have the tranny rebuilt, but rather find a new one. So what would you guys do in this situation, I have a friend with an 86 base tranny that is totally swapable, and best of all free!!! But do you think it is worth getting a TII tranny since my ohter one is dead?? Plus I'd only need the tranny casuse a mechanic here has already mated a TII tranny on an S5 GXL without doing the whole drive shaft etc... swap. what would you do?

Before you go for a rebuild, put Redline MT-90 in the tranny. It's magical stuff. My last tranny was starting to grind going into 2nd. In with the Redline and out with the grind. :D

Do I have to go to a specialty shop to get that stuff?? I was thinking maybe a good cleansing and refill of tranny fluid, but maybe I'll try and get me some of that stuff instead of normal fluid.

Grab the yellow pages and start calling auto performance shops - you won't find it at Crappy Tire.

And call around - prices WILL vary. Redline also makes a coolant additive (Water Wetter) that I used to buy at one shop for $16 a bottle. Then last year I found it at another place here in town for $10 plus tax...

Instead of starting a new thread I hope you guys don't mind i post this here. Well my tranny shifts alright, wheni go into 2nd and 3rd hard i get a slight grind, nothing too bad. But it'll grind really bad dropping from 3rd to 2nd.
But i tried "double clutching it" like i used to do in my Integra to keep it from grinding, but it's no help. (and I know it doesn't make me faster)

So I'm not sure what the problem is, my transmission fluid is good, and I do have some MT90. But i don't think it'll help that much if I already have nice clean fluid.
This is on a 88 10AE with 90k miles.

You have something other than the Redline in your tranny? Meaning that the Redline is on a shelf somewhere? The Redline won't do you any good if it's not in the tranny. :)

Redline definately helped! I only feel a little notch, instead of a big grind.

the problem is letting the rpms drop too much.....if you can shift fast enough or blip the throttle in between shifts it helps greatly...under WOT in my TII I can't get it into 3rd unless I rev to 7krpms or more....even though you go past the the power range when you shift you will enter the max power range...

I know I'm still knew to these forums but have you tried double clutching. Its not as hard on your syncro's and it helps your syncro's line up during the shift. its alot harder to get used to but your car will thank you for it in the long run.
