you guys with aluminum f/w on your TII, i need some launching advice
 

i have a 12lb flywheel in my 88TII. what rpm would bet best for racing.

3500 rpm
4500 rpm
5500 rpm

?????

You do realize that a super light flywheel is detrimental to drag racing, right?

With my stock F/W i would launch at like 4,000 rpm's, but now with the 17 lbs steel i do it at 4,800 so i would recommend 5,000 and go from there. Traction is always the biggest issue though.

yeah, heavier are generally best for drag racing
but light flywheels are good for accelerating, less moving weight and inertia to ovrecome

About all a lightweight flywheel is good for is road racing so you can make your downshifts quicker :)

hmmm , understandable but what about acceleration since its spinning to higher RPMs faster

That's odd because when I had mine installed my car miraculously became faster and offset the extra weight of my sound system.
I'll run an aluminum flywheel anyday...(mine's 9.5lbs.)


Launch around 4500+ but you'll have to practice feathering gas and clutch balance. Too much = wheel hop. Too little = you'll bog. Once you have it down, you'll have good launches.

P.S. I have a local friend with an '87 TII(pristine condition 54K). He has the same thing I have and loves it.

a 2 stage ignition would be one way of battling the feathering gas and clutch if you dont feel like learning, but learning is better ;-)

well i'll stick with my jacobs node but thanks for the advice. 4000-4500 rpm sounds good. i did the mistake of taking off at 5000+ rpms and that was way to much. with a 12lb f/w those rpms jump up pretty damn quick, im gonna need a short throw shifter too.

The best launching N/A guy I knew launched at 7k with a stock flywheel. (Street tires too!) I would assume then that with a lightweight flywheel the sky's not only the limit, but mandatory :) I could never launch as high as him because my tires would break loose first.

I think a light flywheel would be a GREAT advantage, especially in the lower gears... the tricky part would be actually launching the car. The launch is, of course, like 90% of your run... maybe use a stock clutch instead of an upgraded one, so the clutch slips and keeps the engine from bogging?

everyone i have asked about there lightflywheels said their times dropped alot, they said u just have to be a good driver in order to not let the Rpms drop too much. basically everyone i asked said it help their drag racing......
