WTF? Muffler blew off

So I was driving late at night and pushing the car a bit, doing the recommended weekly redlining. On one of my redlining stints, around 6k rpm in 3rd, the exhaust note suddenly got a lot louder and stayed louder. The backfiring also became a lot more pronounced and I suspected that I got a hole in my muffler some how. When I got home, I noticed my passenger side muffler was askew so I looked underneath and the entire muffler had actually blown off. The pipe at the front end of the muffler is bent to shit and I think the muffler is only hanging on by the hangars. WTF? Has this happened to anyone else?

LuckyTII7 04-03-08 02:07 AM

i went thru about 5 cheap mufflers like that with my old NA. It ran pig rich and loaded the muffler up with fumes and backfired at redline. i never quite figured it out so i put a glass pack on it and a pair of cheap APC cans on it

rust? cheap muffler?

Ex-Eg-Driver 04-03-08 03:14 AM

Wow, your car is just THAT fast man.

staticguitar313 04-03-08 04:49 AM

I've had a muffler break loose, the piping rusted through and it just kinda hung by the hangers until i removed it lol.

RyosukeD 04-03-08 06:19 AM

haha. Never heard of that, but that's crazy man.

RETed 04-03-08 08:01 AM

This is what happens when you combine a rust (or cheap) muffler and backfiring...
Yes, it can do damage to the exhaust system like this.
This is why I dunno why idiots WANT to cause the exhaust to backfire...
*sigh*

:wallbash:

The shit you hear on this site is ridiculous.

Spec.

blackedoutFC3S 04-03-08 08:49 AM

ya, the only time ive ever heard of that is with older mufflers that rust out and disconect from the pipe... that sucks though man sorry, just grab some wood glue and throw it back on there... thats what my friend did with his hyundai accent, but then again let this be a lesson to all of you to never first off own a hyundai accent, and second off at least dont moddify it

Aaron Cake 04-03-08 08:58 AM

It happens. I've never seen it on a 2nd gen, only heard of it. However I blew up a muffler in my SA due to stuck carb secondaries and that wonderful (no sarcasm) thermal reactor exhaust.

t24todd 04-03-08 11:36 AM

time to buy name brand exhaust? finally replace the 20 year old rusted exhaust?

i bought mine with a crappie muffler on it it pretty much exploded at all the rolled seams on but i think it came from checker so what do you expect

xfeastonarsex 04-03-08 12:47 PM

Take a pic of the muffler for us. The same thing happened on my saturn, blew the back end of the muffler clean off the engine side. Pretty wild.

that is it. most of the exhaust problems that you will have are from running rich and cheap parts. i had a friend blow out a cat from running too rich.

TehMonkay 04-03-08 05:55 PM

Friends FB was running too rich and literally blew the muffler wide open at autocross.

ITSWILL 04-03-08 10:50 PM

my buddy had a dump truck with a big block chevy engine. We were having a bunch of trouble getting it started (flooding the crap out of it) and when it did it blew the muffler up like it was a bomb. It had a whole new exhaust system in it, just comes down to the fact then when fuel collects in your exhaust and it ignites, well it blows up.

RYS13 04-03-08 10:57 PM

For all you people who assume I was running a cheap muffler, no, it was stock. Why do you assume I cheaped out and put on some piece of shit Ractive mufflers or something?

Deep breaths man!

People are just trying to put some ideas out there, be thankful they replied.

They don't know you don't have a crap muffler on there so they put the idea out there.

Anyway, it sounds like you are either running rich or the thing was pretty flooded recently.

FuStEr 04-03-08 11:32 PM

wows

shadoe 04-03-08 11:38 PM

rust or flooding

blackedoutFC3S 04-03-08 11:40 PM

ya i just removed my stock exhaust and put my friends (shadoe actually) HKS exhaust which im buying from him and my stock exhaust was pretty rusted out... i dunno how longer it mightve lasted honestly...
