WTF is this?

i am new to the turbo motors and i just got my new turboII motor in and i am getting all the parts together and i noticed on the back of the manifold there is something missing. anyone know what it is and what it does?

also on my downpipe it looks like someone used some sort of stuff that you would make your own gasket out of. i have searched and i cant find anything about it, anyone know what it is called and where i can find some?

what you're missing is the thermowax unit. no big deal if you dont want a high idle on a cold start. the second picture definatly looks as though someone used a home made gasket....

Looks like to be RTV and some kind of self cut gasket material. Maybe?

You can go down to Napa and they have like a sheet of gasket material you can buy for 3 bucks
:)

IT's amazing how much you can learn from people with a passion for a car. I hope i can become a Jedi like most of these guy that can look at a hole in the engine and tell you what part you need to fill it.

mazdaverx713b 07-07-08 01:58 AM

what brand of downpipe are you using?

Actually, he still has the thermowax. It just doesn't have coolant running through it, so the cam will not move when the car warms up. The part that gets threaded in is the thermo-valve that feeds vacuum to the actuator for the outer set of secondary throttle plates. Since he's probably had the TB mod done, this valve is also gone.

mazdaverx713b 07-07-08 02:18 AM

indeed. i was just showing him a complete setup with the water thermo valve installed. it looks like he might have a jdm throttle body and uim... i cant say for sure but i have a jdm manifold and tb in the garage and i believe that the uim has the extra vacuum ports above the brake booster vacuum port and it also lacks the water thermo valve on the tb if i'm not mistaken on the...

I was talking with a Permatex rep recently and learned that Hondabond is actually permatex ultra grey relabeled Hondabond. That is why some honda dealers might just sell you ultra grey.

But if you were to use silicone on the exhaust, it would be better to use the copper high temp rtv on exhausts. Although getting the real exhaust gasket will be better.

The ultra black is best used in parts with lots of oil
